Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jancis Robinson (18)
Mid cherry red. Less open than the Vosne-Romanée just tasted. Peppery and definitely spiced with a touch of oak and stems all tangled up in the aroma. A dark beauty as it opens in the glass. So elegant, embryonic and yet refined already. Fresh, appears subtle, and it is, but it's also powerful and long.In Bond£760.00 -

Cask sample. Subtle first impression. Ripe citrus and spice but impressionistic. As it opens, there's a rich creaminess. Rounded and full in the mouth. An unusual combination of gentle intensity. In Bond£1,595.00 -

The 2022 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a blend of 11 different cuvées and includes, for the first time, the plot of "30 Rangs". This vintage includes 80% whole bunches, and like La Richemoine, it is deftly subsumed on the nose, which blossoms with vivacious red berry fruit, forest floor, white truffle, and light autumn leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a svelte Clos des Lambrays with a slightly chalky, mineral-rich finish. Very tender and complex, this is undoubtedly a great wine with a long-term future. In Bond£2,796.50 -

The 2022 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark plum, raspberry coulis, incense and light sous-bois scents. It takes quite a few swirls of the glass to get the aromas going. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, assertive opening. The tannins are slightly chalky, lending this Corton-Pougets edginess/nerve. Fine mineralité towards the finish yet tightly wound and almost curmudgeonly in its nascent state, this Grand Cru will demand long-term aginIn Bond£560.00 -

Glowing fresh crimson colour. The nose shows fresh fruit without detail as yet. I am impressed by the weight and energy of this very promising Clos Vougeot There is plenty up front, muscular, but enough behind too. A beautiful finish as pure class peeps throughout. Very happy with this! Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£995.00 -

Savour the exquisite Louis Michel & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2022, a superior embodiment of prestigious Chardonnay hailing from the illustrious winemaking genealogy of the Michels. This commanding Grand Cru unearths its strength from the mineral-rich soils of the Grenouilles vineyard, located in the heart of the celebrated Chablis region of Burgundy, France. In the skilful hands of Guillaume Michel, the wine undergoes a maturation process for 12 to 16 months in stainless steel tanks, preserving the natural complexity and authenticity of its character. The end product is a striking white wine boasting an impressive harmony of elegance, power, and freshness. It captivates with a bouquet of white fruits and floral hints, a palate of concentrated, ripe fruits, pleasantly underpinned by a biting minerality. Imbibe the true essence of Louis Michel & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2022, a treasure of the Michel legacy.

The Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2022 is a majestic embodiment of terroir expression from one of Burgundy's revered family wineries. This Chardonnay boasts resolute complexity, offering a bouquet characterised by touches of lemon curd, vanilla, and flinty mineral nuances. Hand-picked in the prestigious Vaudésir vineyard estate in Chablis - a terroir revered for its Kimmeridgian soil, the grapes were cool-fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve their inherent integrity.
Louis Michel, a winemaking luminary since 1850, utilises traditional methodology, no oak regime, and minimal intervention to foster wines of transcendent quality and typicity. A notable feature of this illustrious house - their propensity for precision viticulture is commendably demonstrated in Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2022. A distinguished wine of elegance and minerality, it is expressive of its unique origin, concluding with an irresistible saline finish. A truly exceptional illustrative of Grand Cru Chablis.

One barrel which is by measure – 280 litres, made with new dowels but one year old ends. A fuller yellow, with massive energy, multiple fruits through the yellow and white spectra, yet also rich summer flowers. Impressive density as one would hope, then firm acidity behind, still such a baby, and then suddenly the wine kicks on to another dimension at the finish, with a reprise of all the fruits and a greater sense of harmony. The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a mineral-driven, obdurate nose that you might presume derives from a cooler growing season. Subtle petrichor/wet pavement aromas intermix with sea spray. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely creamy texture, vanilla mixed with orange rind and tangerine. There’s fine depth, though I prefer the precision of the VIrondot and Caillerets. However, it will surely mature beautifully in bottle. In Bond£2,480.00 -

45% whole bunch vinification, 7 new out of 9 barrels. A fine red to crimson colour. The nose is less flamboyant than the Mazoyères yet with serious intent. This is solid with an iron rich blood orange tang, then a dark strawberry fruit behind, a firmer backbone – showing clearly how well this wine will age. A magical Mazis-Chambertin with excellent length. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£1,560.00
