Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)
A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,100.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Savour the exquisite Louis Michel & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2022, a superior embodiment of prestigious Chardonnay hailing from the illustrious winemaking genealogy of the Michels. This commanding Grand Cru unearths its strength from the mineral-rich soils of the Grenouilles vineyard, located in the heart of the celebrated Chablis region of Burgundy, France. In the skilful hands of Guillaume Michel, the wine undergoes a maturation process for 12 to 16 months in stainless steel tanks, preserving the natural complexity and authenticity of its character. The end product is a striking white wine boasting an impressive harmony of elegance, power, and freshness. It captivates with a bouquet of white fruits and floral hints, a palate of concentrated, ripe fruits, pleasantly underpinned by a biting minerality. Imbibe the true essence of Louis Michel & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2022, a treasure of the Michel legacy.

The Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2022 is a majestic embodiment of terroir expression from one of Burgundy's revered family wineries. This Chardonnay boasts resolute complexity, offering a bouquet characterised by touches of lemon curd, vanilla, and flinty mineral nuances. Hand-picked in the prestigious Vaudésir vineyard estate in Chablis - a terroir revered for its Kimmeridgian soil, the grapes were cool-fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve their inherent integrity.
Louis Michel, a winemaking luminary since 1850, utilises traditional methodology, no oak regime, and minimal intervention to foster wines of transcendent quality and typicity. A notable feature of this illustrious house - their propensity for precision viticulture is commendably demonstrated in Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2022. A distinguished wine of elegance and minerality, it is expressive of its unique origin, concluding with an irresistible saline finish. A truly exceptional illustrative of Grand Cru Chablis.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)
(5-Star Wine) 100% of both new wood and whole bunch vinification. The Clos de Bèze sits in its own tank apart from the rest of the wines. Must be a bit of a snob I suppose. A solid central core of purple, an imperial robe. Just a soupçon of oak on the nose but obviously the fruit is far more evident. There is indeed an immense weight of dark fruit on the nose, with the whole bunch pepper and spice woven throughout. Excellent weight and density. Rich red roses, along with a sensual dark raspberry, sensuality and structure beautifully interwoven. Drink from 2032-2045+.In Bond£2,623.00 -

Burghound (94-97)
(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. In Bond£1,000.00 -

Wine Advocate (95-97)
The 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses unwinds in the glass with aromas of oyster shell, orange blossom, warm stones and subtle hints of citrus oil—this cuvée is almost always more about rocks than fruit. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and electric, it's racy and tensile, with a long, resonant finish. In Bond£3,000.00 -

Fresh pale green tint. Didier describes this as the entry level grand cru. The average age of the vines is at or above 60 years. There is admirable tension here, an electric start, more middleweight through the middle, then quite a powerful middle with decent dry extract, and good length. Keeps coming back. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£204.00 -

The very steep aspect of Côte Bouguerots is highlighted by a much greater emphasis on minerality than Fevre's Bougros. This is a grand cru is every way - so much drive on the palate with plenty of extract, concentration, salinity and length. Certain to keep very well but this is also surprisingly approachable early on. DIdier Seguier says it's likely to close down after 18-24 months but this is clearly a fine example with masses of potential. In Bond£323.00 -

Beautiful mix of richness, grace and drive. As always with Fèvre's Les Preuses, this is elegant, long-living and fine. Ultra-stylish and very mineral. From two sections of vines. One situated low down on Les Preuses next to Vincent Dauvissat's plot, on the flatter part facing south, the other on deeper soils, with both adding richness and totalling 2.5ha.In Bond£325.00 -

A small lot so better to assemble early, which has just been done. A fresh green light shines through the clouds nonetheless. Picked among the first, a little yellow fruit plums and fresh white peaches. Salty rather than saline, with a fine firm backbone. The finish is particularly impressive, with the fruit becoming ever fresher at the back of the palate. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£256.00
