Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (92)The 2022 Saint-Aubin Charmois 1er Cru, completely frosted in the previous vintage, has a tightly wound nose with crushed stone filtering through malic fruit. It is Puligny-like, terse as that is appealing, with touches of white tea and chamomile. The palate is well-balanced with impressive tension on the entry, gorgeous flecks of white peach and Satsuma with a prickle of ginger on the finish. Seek this out. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain sports a little reduction on the nose. It’s a little earthy in style, the 40% new oak neatly integrated. The palate is balanced with a pleasant "fatness" on the entry, a little waxy in texture but like the Village Cru, it needs a little more tension on the pithy finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)Still in barrel. A gorgeous lemon and lime colour with a striking bouquet, the herbal side is fully there, plus an intensity which never oversteps the mark. Body and class together. Weighty and enticing at the same time. Very well done. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. |

£525.00 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)Clear pale lemon. The bouquet offers a slightly more chiselled note, though still delivering white orchard fruit. Crisp and concentrated on the palate, with a generous build-up of fruit and a long aftertaste. Drink from 2028-2035. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has an intense, minerally bouquet with touches of chalk, yellow plum and light blood orange aromas. The palate is well-balanced, one of Bouzereau's more powerful cuvées with impressive persistence and a sapid aftertaste. The pedigree of the terroir really comes through in this Meursault. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a typical Perrières bouquet with crushed rock/flint percolating through the veneer of slightly tropical fruit. It takes time to settle in the glass. The palate is harmonious with bright acidity, a much more elegant style of Perrières with a creamy finish that lingers in the mouth. That build in the mouth is deeply impressive, although it retains composure and finesse from start to finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)An attractive racy pale primrose. The bouquet is fully of energy, this is not too heavy a Charmes, but a fine one. The palate offers an excellent weight of fruit, ripe apples, a little fresh plum, very good grip and a long finish. Smart stuff! |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Pretty light lemon colour. Some floral character, fine precision, a little lemon note too. More an elegant Puligny than a powerful one, though there is certainly adequate flesh right across the palate, with an attractive tingle of acidity to finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)A glowing pale lemon yellow. There is a clear white fruit charm to this, a little more chiselled than the softly welcoming Chenevottes, with a limestone length and purity at the finish. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (93)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru is actually more backward on the nose compared to the Village Cru, tightly coiled with mineral-driven, malic fruit. The palate is well balanced with neatly integrated oak on the entry. Fresh and saline, there’s ample grip toward the finish, with just a touch of grilled walnut and fine length. Excellent. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91)Fresh clear pale colour. The nose has less character than my favourites in the line-up. Takes a little time, then more emerges. There is something of a steely backbone, this is nicely made but I pine for pinot in this vineyard. Well balanced. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)An attractive mid lemon colour. The nose is a little more backward, but the palate delivers impressive tension along with the usual complete mouthful of the purest white fruit. Tension pursues all the way through and the ripeness is perfect. This is not the most fruit forward of Chaumées I have tasted here, but has all the qualities for ageing well. Drink from 2028-2034. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale colour with a lime time. A fresh raw fruit energy to the nose. The white fruit expands vividly across the palate, the same light toast from the oak, but nicely integrated, this is a Chassagne with considerable charm that can be drunk early, but has a fine thread of minerality through to the back. Drink from 2026-2031. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90)Planted 25 years ago and dying because of the rootstock problem. Pale lemon colour, with not so much bouquet. A little firm on the palate, undemonstrative though there is plenty of flesh, a little acidity. For the moment it is lacking a little personality. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91)The holding is next to Champ Canet rather than higher up towards Blagny. I am not finding much bouquet. There is plenty of density here, along with a youthful bitterness, as if lemon pips had been squeezed too strongly. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Mostly Clos de la Jacquelotte but with some more fruit outside the Clos. They used to sell the extra part, but now prefer to keep it. Pale lemon colour, with a pleasing bouquet, not quite the volume of fruit of Garenne on the nose, but more on the palate where fruit rather than flesh drives the wine. Good length, well made. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)Pale colour with a light green tint. This has flesh and grip while the fruit style is not without elegance. The mineral acidity plays very nicely at the back. This wine has considerable potential. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)A mix of their various plots throughout this large vineyard. Clear pure pale lemon and Iime. The bouquet is more perfumed to suggest additional ripeness. Very pure intense white fruit, with good acidity, and just a lick of honeysuckle. The whole is very well balanced and will be delicious. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |
