Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Meursault Les Poruzots 1er Cru marries fruit intensity with drive. It’s a combination that works so well here. Then again, that is a signature of this part of the vineyard. Crushed rocks, lemon peel, mint, white pepper and light tropical notes all come alive with some time in the glass. In Bond£680.00 -

Cask sample. A touch smoky on the nose. Invitingly stony/mineral aroma. Then this unexpectedly creamy rounded texture and still excellent freshness with a lightly sour aftertaste increasing the freshness. In Bond£285.00 -
Immerse yourself in the sublime elegance of Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres Blanc 2022, beautifully produced in the heart of the renowned Meursault appellation, within Burgundy, France. This exquisite wine is the testament to the time-honoured traditional methods of Jean-Michel Gaunoux, whose meticulous vineyard practices and rigorous grape selection have earned global recognition. The Perrieres vineyard, a prime parcel of limestone-rich soils, yields a wine with haunting minerality and refined complexity. Some light green reflections in the primrose yellow colour. A stricter nose, perhaps a touch of sulphur. This may also appear more backward coming after the Charmes. Then a vast wealth of fruit on the palate and now we see the real wine. It maintains the herbal note I associate with Genevrières, alongside golden fruit at a perfect degree of ripeness. The fruit and the acidity weave in and out of each other. I would not want the fruit to be riper but it is full of charm as it stands, and kept in place by the precision of the structure. Very fine. Drink from 2029-2037.In Bond£636.00 -

No deeper in colour than its stable mates but broader in bouquet, offering a fleshy white fruit. The balance here is impeccable on the palate, with fine acidity behind that supports the generosity of fruit. A good example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£230.00 -

A little more power to the nose ahead of its stablemates Charmes and Genevrières, indeed much more backward. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. This has an impressively broad density of fruit behind, the detail not yet being expressed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£265.00 -

Mid lemon. The bouquet indicates a surprising breadth of flavour, as if this were a riper spot, and the attack continues in the same fashion, before the wine tightens up at the back in a crystalline fashion, as the stones take over. Very much a food wine, and one which will reward ageing. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£492.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Two separate terroirs, the slope with a little clay topsoil, the plateau just the stones. This shows a little bit of both styles. Broader in the beam, some ripe apple fruits, a little tannic at the finish, fine wine that does not quite challenge the supremacy of En Montceau. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£485.00 -

Vinous (92)
The 2022 Saint-Aubin Charmois 1er Cru, completely frosted in the previous vintage, has a tightly wound nose with crushed stone filtering through malic fruit. It is Puligny-like, terse as that is appealing, with touches of white tea and chamomile. The palate is well-balanced with impressive tension on the entry, gorgeous flecks of white peach and Satsuma with a prickle of ginger on the finish. Seek this out.In Bond£426.00 -

Still in barrel. A gorgeous lemon and lime colour with a striking bouquet, the herbal side is fully there, plus an intensity which never oversteps the mark. Body and class together. Weighty and enticing at the same time. Very well done. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£680.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with mineral-driven citrus fruit and hints of honeysuckle developing in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with a sapid entry. A little resinous in texture, there is plenty of extract, underlying the complex, stem ginger and lemon thyme-tinged finish. Give this plenty of bottle age, and there is very good potential. In Bond£525.00 -

Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has an intense, minerally bouquet with touches of chalk, yellow plum and light blood orange aromas. The palate is well-balanced, one of Bouzereau's more powerful cuvées with impressive persistence and a sapid aftertaste. The pedigree of the terroir really comes through in this Meursault. In Bond£675.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)
The 2022 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a typical Perrières bouquet with crushed rock/flint percolating through the veneer of slightly tropical fruit. It takes time to settle in the glass. The palate is harmonious with bright acidity, a much more elegant style of Perrières with a creamy finish that lingers in the mouth. That build in the mouth is deeply impressive, although it retains composure and finesse from start to finish. In Bond£840.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
An attractive racy pale primrose. The bouquet is fully of energy, this is not too heavy a Charmes, but a fine one. The palate offers an excellent weight of fruit, ripe apples, a little fresh plum, very good grip and a long finish. Smart stuff! In Bond£600.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90)
Planted 25 years ago and dying because of the rootstock problem. Pale lemon colour, with not so much bouquet. A little firm on the palate, undemonstrative though there is plenty of flesh, a little acidity. For the moment it is lacking a little personality. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£642.00
