Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (88-90)The 2022 Aloxe-Corton Village was partially affected by hail and is the only cuvée to include whole bunches, which works well on the nose and has more freshness than the Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichets. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannins, and good tension on the finish. Delightful. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)Mid crimson, with very little nose. The is a wealth of red fruit, but then the tannins are rather dry. This cuvée is usually a little more elegant. The finish suggests though that this will all come together. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)The first to be picked, which is unusual. A mid crimson colour with some dark raspberry and plum fruit, showing a bit more than the Chapitre. A succulent rich raspberry fruit on the palate., some tannins but nicely interwoven. The two Aloxe 1ers Crus seem to have traded places this year, and for once I have a clear preference for the Vercots. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Corton Grand Cru comes from a parcel within the lieu-dit of Le Charlemagne. It has quite a serious bouquet, tightly wound. This will need time to open but is extremely well-defined with a sense of Pinot classicism. It doesn't sing 'n dance. The palate is well-balanced, the 25% new oak seamlessly integrated, building discretely towards the beautifully poised finish. This Corton might be easily overlooked, but for me, it epitomizes how far this Grand Cru has improved in recent years. Wonderful. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot 1er Cru is certainly more flattering on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jean at the moment, with ebullient red berry and blueberry fruit, well-defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s plenty of fleshy red fruit with cracked black pepper and allspice towards the finish. Maybe the Domaine's strongest red this vintage. Very fine. |

Vinous (88-90)Matured in 20% new oak, the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge has quite an intense bouquet with dark cherries, blueberry and light violet scents. The palate is well-balanced with a powdery texture, moderate weight, and a little graphite towards the tender but lengthy finish. Give it just a year in bottle. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru, which had been bottled and comes from a single parcel of 70-year-old vines, has an attractive bouquet with cranberries, raspberries, touches of black olive and marine scents, with hints of white flower emerging with time. The palate is sweet and quite candied on the entry, fleshy but with a fine structure that segues into a spicy, white pepper-tinged finish. Like a mini-Bonnes Mares! |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes has a well-defined bouquet of red and black fruit, cohering in the glass and revealing fine mineralité and tension. The oak is neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, pliant tannins, fleshy and focused with a twist of orange rind towards the lively finish. Just a delicious, vivacious Chambolle in the making here. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with more floral tones than the Les Millandes, wilted violets infusing the black and red fruit, fine mineralité coming from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite fresh and saline, with a cohesive, very "controlled" finish that lends this wine verticality. Very sapid. Give this 3-4 years in bottle. |

||||
Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is a tiny production matured each year in a single, tailor-made "Aphrodite" barrel from the Cavin cooperage. This vintage is just 400 liters. Because of the very light toasting, the new oak does not impede the aromatics: brambly red berry fruit and fish scale touches. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet and slightly candied opening, offering blood orange-laced fleshy red fruit, with vanilla towards the finish. It is very seductive, and despite the new oak, the structure suggests this will be more approachable than Legros's other cuvées. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru comes from two parcels, one planted north-south and the other east-west. Its attractive bouquet offers brambly red berry fruit, forest floor and light black truffle scents. There is good complexity here; it is very composed. The palate is well-balanced, with good depth and gentle grip. There is mainly black fruit here with plenty of freshness and mineralité. The finish has commendable precision and feels long and tender. Excellent. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92+)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru, which has just been bottled, has a feisty bouquet with macerated red cherries, black currant and light violet aromas borrowed from over the boundary in Vosne-Romanée. The well-balanced palate has a sorbet-like freshness, candied orange peel interwoven through the mainly black fruit, and a spicy/black pepper-tinged finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle - it is an excellent NSG that may improve with bottle age. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Bousselots 1er Cru comes from a parcel located slightly lower down the incline than the Aux Thorey, the vines around 50 years old. It has a well-defined and more composed bouquet with vivacious redcurrant, wild strawberry, and blood orange scents, very focused and energetic. The medium-bodied palate has fine tannins, very precise and pure, with good tension and complexity, and a mineral-rich, complex finish. This may be the best Nuit Saint-Georges I have tasted from Legros. Highly recommended. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru has a very harmonious bouquet, seductive with slightly richer Morello cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry fruit, just a touch of sous-bois manifesting with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a riper entry than Legros's other cuvées. It has moderate weight, tapering slightly towards the finish when you want it to fan out (like the Bousselots). There’s fine mineralité though I feel it will have more to offer with bottle age. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90)The 2022 Vougeot Les Cras 1er Cru comes from a parcel next to Château de la Tour, planted next to Chardonnay from Domaine de la Vougeraie. It has a potent marine/estuarine-scented bouquet with mainly red berry fruit and hints of morels and crushed stone. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit, very smooth in style, although, like in previous years, I discern more complexity on Legros's Chambolle and Morey-Saint-Denis cuvées. Fine. |
