Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
5 barrels, two from Petit Maupertuis destemmed, three others which are in new barrels and with 100% whole bunch vinification. The Clos Vougeot is very reductive at first, though this starts to blow off. There is a huge volume of fruit though and the two halves seem to marry up. Actually, rather an astonishing weight of fruit at the back of the palate. Definitely a Vin de Garde. This still needs more elevage but is very promising. Drink from 2032-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
From Evocelles, En Songes, and below La Justice. 50% whole bunch vinification, 35% new wood. Fairly deep crimson. The stems do lift the nose, dark strawberry with pepper. Really significant weight behind, far from simple strawberry, with balanced tannins, enough acidity and very good persistence. The concentration hides the wood. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£315.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
Laurent characterises Argillats as a hot and cold terroir. 15% whole bunch vinification, 3 barrels of which two new. Not quite so deep in colour and a little lighter in fruit, though the oak marks the nose, and the palate. Nonetheless, I think the fruit will fight through, and it has an appealing fresh red fruit quality. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£365.00 -

80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in orderIn Bond£1,000.00 -

A hint of star anise, but also a wide spectrum of black fruit aromas. In spite of all the concentration this is bright and uplifting. Makes you feel glad to be alive! In Bond£1,302.00 -

A sleeping giant! Incredibly complex structure with enormous earthy depth, the sweet fruit really coming through in the spectacular finish. Wild energy! Long term stuff, but the aftertaste is incredible. In Bond£1,158.00 -

30% whole bunch vinification. The colour is more purple than crimson. The bouquet is extremely elegant and shows some concentration. A slightly firm finish at the moment but the elevage is not finished yet, and this should be resolved with extra time. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Moderate wood again frames the fresh and unusually expressive nose of forest floor, the sauvage and various wild red berries. There is impressive concentration to the powerful and tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the very firm finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is already attractively complex and a wine that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 yearsIn Bond£1,000.00 -

Faiveley pulled out quite a lot after the frost. There is still plenty left to make this wine, though. Solid red crimson colour, with a delicious red fruit nose with its mineral overlay. Alpine strawberries, fair concentration, very detailed, maybe just needs to kick on more at the finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Quite a shy nose, but on the palate this is so dense without the slightest hint of heaviness. All red fruits with an almost lemony freshness at the long, intensely mineral finish. Great potential! In Bond£1,488.00 -

The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is missing the same cohesion and presence as the Latricières at the moment, though it has an attractive rose bush/potpourri scent that emerges with time. The medium-bodied palate has a tad more angularity than the Latricières and fine mineralité, edgy and linear with a strict, tensile, lightly spiced finish. What you might term a "grower", aloof, but the sapidity draws you back. Excellent. In Bond£1,000.00 -
James Suckling (93-94)
Enticing nose of black raspberries and sour cherries. Wonderful freshness and vitality. Silky tannins for this appellation. Long, clean and bright finish. In Bond£323.00 -
Decanter (93)
TOP VALUE This wine has a ripe, plummy fruit aroma and earthy complexity that develop on the palate. Straight and a little strict, it will still drink on release but will be better in three to five years. The grapes come from a 2.54ha holding planted in 1971 and 1982, on limestone soils exposed to the south, making this an exceptional site.In Bond£297.00 -

As usual, the 2022 Musigny Grand Cru is a micro-cuvée from a tiny 0.03-hectare parcel. Wafting from the glass with aromas of black cherries, wild berries, incense, licorice and exotic spices, it's full-bodied, seamless and perfumed, with a deep and multidimensional core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, resonant, intensely saline finish. In Bond£1,995.00 -

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru is aged in 50% new oak and completely de-stemmed. This is pleasingly floral on the nose, with wilted roses filtering through the raspberry and redcurrant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a keen line of acidity. This is very elegant in style, with a composed and transparent finish. What a lovely Les Damodes from Faiveley. In Bond£456.00 -
