Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

Mid yellow. The Folatières shows depth of fruit more than the floral side of Puligny. The palate offers several layers of fruit, ripe apple though with a crunchy side, and a light citrus. Overall, this makes a fine and substantial Folatières. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.

Pale lemon yellow. Attractive juicy fruit on the nose. Quite a graceful approach, backed by more than adequate density of fruit, lemon scented ripe apples, good length. Classy Bourgogne Blanc from a particularly good site. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: October 2023.

Mid crimson purple. A waft of engaging ripe pinot on its floral side. Engaging full fruit, just the right acidity, gourmand but stylish. “Beaucoup de buvabilité” says Romaric, meaning that this is for drinking, not sipping. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted: October 2023.

Not in bottle. Pale colour with a green tint. A lean and lively fruit here, which builds into a white fruit energy, a crisper finish, tightly wound, quite impressive potential. Very millerand, small crop, high skin to juice ratio, which delivers the concentration and the slightly tannic finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

Not in bottle. Medium to bright purple. 50% whole bunch makes a more classic pinot fruit on the nose. Opens out very nicely, slightly more acidity than tannin to make the structure. No great density but pleasingly perfumed with raspberry and rose petals. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

Just two ouvrées of 15 year old vines. Not in bottle. Mid crimson, attractively perfumed, just a bit sweaty, concentrated raspberry with some strawberry, good acidity. 100% whole bunch gives the style. A long and lifted finish with purity, suggests that this will come together very nicely. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

In bottle. Pale lemon and lime, with a fine stylish bouquet, very classy, not phenolic, yet delivers good flavour on the palate, a lime note at the back, and balanced acidity. Textbook Aligoté. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: October 2023.

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2023.

Not in bottle. Two plots, one of old vines at the southern end, one at the north, slightly younger and more productive. An elegant and charming bouquet which continues across the palate, with a fine crunchy acidity to finish. May not call attention to itself, but it is fine. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

This is from the excellent Pargues vineyard, vinified and aged in stainless steel. Pale colour. The bouquet has a Chablisian crispness but also the juiciness of this 2022 vintage. Crisply concentrated on the palate, this still needs quite a bit more elevage. Which always needs time as shown by the reductive tang. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2023.

60/40 tank/barrel, not assembled yet. A fine bright mid lemon yellow. A nobility of white fruit across the nose, with considerable intensity on the palate, more trenchant acidity perhaps, fairly full bodied and a long gracious finish. By the time this is bottled in January it should be a very fine wine. The aftertaste is already extremely promising. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted: June 2023.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-96)

Clear bright lemon, a powerful and high-class nose, in concentrated white fruit but with a fine sense of balance. This is textbook Vaudésir, a beautiful example, with all the necessary tension alongside a wealth of fruit. The oak is subdued. Fermented in tank then to barrel with no new wood in late March, with two glass wine globes. Crystalline at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.

One of the slightly darker purple colours, with a ripe and dark edged fruit. I sense the whole bunches more here than in the Clos Vougeot. Becomes more nuanced further back on the palate, with greater energy to the fruit. I was not sure from the nose but the palate works with a good balance between the slightly riper fruit profile and the acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

A fine deep purple, with brilliance. The bouquet has the energy which we expect with that extra note of headiness. The Malconsorts opens out gorgeously and is kept fresh by a good thread of acidity. Pure, long, fine, lifted, medium plus bodied but there is a little bit of majesty here nonetheless. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

A blend of Damodes du bas and Basses Maizières, picked on 3rd and 7th September. Attractive mid purple. Some nobility to the nose but in a discreet way. This is happily balanced with excellent class, heady Vosne fruit, even some spice, then a firmer tannin, but this works really well. Damodes gives the lift, Maizières the body. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.
