Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

5 Star Wine. A brilliant purple, with a fascinating touch of spice to add to the depth of dark yet royal fruit. Just keeps getting more profound on the nose. Incredibly intense through the middle, excellent mineral acidity behind, and a length well above the others. Thank you for this perfection. In Bond£1,000.00 -

Tressage here, no tractor for years so as to avoid compacting the very light soil. One barrel, magnums only. Mid ruby with clearly a riper more perfumed style of fruit. Even a slight plum note to the perfume, then stonier and more saline on the palate. The fruit leaves a sweet impression in the mouth. Super fruit concentration behind. Drink from 2030-2036. The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has darker fruit on the nose than the Clos de la Roche: blackberry and bilberry, crushed violet, and plenty of forest floor commingling with light granitic scents. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, very harmonious with a cashmere texture. There’s impressive weight on the finish with outstanding tension. I thought the 2021 was a knockout last year… This is, too.In Bond£2,150.00 -

More crimson than purple, with notably more presence than the other Beaunes. A range of fruits finishing with some black cherry after the dark red berries, a heightened intensity of fruit, with an excellent balance between tannin and acidity, and notable length. Not racked but has retained purity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

(5 Star Wine) The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Fresh and even slightly peppery at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

In bottle since end October. Mostly from Les Porlottes, which is higher and cooler and the last to be picked, plus also the small holdings of 1ers crus Baudes and Fuées. A glowing purple with quite a dark centre. Fully ripe but not unduly heady dark raspberry fruit, with a fine concentration of fruit. Dark notes include bilberries but also an excellent mineral freshness. Fine length, a very fine example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Bottled end October. Fine pale lemon colour with a definite green tint. As usual, the 2022 Musigny Grand Cru is a micro-cuvée from a tiny 0.03-hectare parcel. Wafting from the glass with aromas of black cherries, wild berries, incense, licorice and exotic spices, it's full-bodied, seamless and perfumed, with a deep and multidimensional core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, resonant, intensely saline finish. In Bond£1,995.00 -

The 2022 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a terse, stony bouquet with touches of granite, orange pith and grilled walnut aromas that gradually gather momentum in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced, with a reductive note lending tension and poise. Surfeit with energy, this fans out wonderfully and is one of the longest in the mouth. Due to be bottled next spring, this is a magnificent Criots. In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is the only cuvée in two one-year-old barrels. I don't think it needs new oak. There is real energy and complexity here, orange pith and lemon verbena, touches of lemon curd. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and power, far more than the Bâtard-Montrachet. It has a beguiling length and precision, velvety smooth, with a hint of walnut on the finish. Divine. In Bond£1,000.00 -

A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though.
