Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Pretty pale primrose in colour. The bouquet is a little more open, showing slightly riper fruit than the more chiselled Clos de la Pucelle. Quite a complex range of flavours with some ripe citrus zest, a mix of yellow fruit, yet nothing over opulent. There is plenty more to discover from this wine which finishes with a fine refreshing acidity. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£600.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is really quite striking, with a floral top note above a wealth of fruit with perfectly judged ripeness. Plenty of energy on the palate, as seems to be the case widely in 2022, with a little yellow plum fruit and ripe citrus to finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£480.00 -

Jean-Michel has a contract to farm an extra five ouvrées of Puligny from the commune for five years. Mid lemon and lime. Fresh and floral, with a good fresh backbone, slight lime blossom. Quite chiselled on the one hand, yet with fair flesh on the other. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£285.00 -
The Jean Pascal et Fils Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2022 is the epitome of elegance, showcasing the artistry of expert winemakers. Located in Burgundy, the Pascal family has mastered the art of growing Chardonnay, and this wine truly reflects their commitment and passion.
Notably, the Folatieres vineyard provides a perfect terroir - the unique blend of limestone and clay producing concentrated flavours of citrus, green apple, and honeysuckle. This wine sees light oak treatment, retaining its natural finesse and minerality whilst adding a delicate layer of complexity.
Since the1960s, Jean Pascal et Fils has gained a reputation for producing exquisitely balanced, age-worthy Puligny Montrachets. The 2022 vintage of their premier cru, Les Folatieres, is no exception - it perfectly captures their mastery of subtlety and power. Pale lemon in colour. A very stylish nose, more elegance than the Referts, and a little fuller in body than La Garenne. The Champ Canet manages to be both floral and with an ideal ripeness of fruit on the nose, pure white orchard fruit across the palate, and backed by well-judged oak in the usual Jean-Marc Boillot vanilla style. Good clean acidity to finish, properly persistence. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£707.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)
More lemon than lime in the colour. More fruit than flowers in the bouquet. A slightly richer style of wine this year, with just enough tension behind, but these days the site is riper than in the past. There is certainly plenty of wine here. A more muscular Puligny. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£555.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)
Pale in colour, with a particularly attractive nose, discreet but with a fine balance between summer flowers and ripe apples. Not over demonstrative on the palate, but the fruit fills out the palate with complex nuances in the orchard fruit profile, and exceptional length. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£775.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)
Pale lemon and lime. The 20222 Les Referts has notably more density than the Garenne, a touch of salt on the citrus at the back of the palate, with generous yellow plum fruit in between. Good length. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£657.00 -

Pale colour with a light green tint. A little smoky touch to the bouquet along with a fresh greengage bouquet, good intensity on the palate, a proper backbone, an immaculate Puligny of medium intensity. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£291.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru has more complexity on the nose than the Les Folatières, with cockle shells and muscles complementing the citrus fruit. Fine definition. The palate is well-balanced with greater depth, though I need to see a little more mineralité and tension develop on the finish. As such, I am more prudent with my score. In Bond£1,080.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, not quite as energetic as usual, though I appreciate the orchard fruit and light waxy aromas. The medium-bodied palate has a slightly pithy entry with lots of extract, leading to a satisfying, lightly spiced finish. Fine.In Bond£930.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru has quite a strict nose that feels a little overshadowed by the Domaine's outstanding Chassagne at the moment. The palate is well-balanced with an edgy opening, slightly chalky in texture, with light red apple and stem ginger notes appearing towards the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. In Bond£585.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain sports a little reduction on the nose. It’s a little earthy in style, the 40% new oak neatly integrated. The palate is balanced with a pleasant "fatness" on the entry, a little waxy in texture but like the Village Cru, it needs a little more tension on the pithy finish. In Bond£580.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
Pretty light lemon colour. Some floral character, fine precision, a little lemon note too. More an elegant Puligny than a powerful one, though there is certainly adequate flesh right across the palate, with an attractive tingle of acidity to finish. In Bond£763.00 -

Pale colour with a light green tint. This has flesh and grip while the fruit style is not without elegance. The mineral acidity plays very nicely at the back. This wine has considerable potential. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£775.00 -

A mix of their various plots throughout this large vineyard. Clear pure pale lemon and Iime. The bouquet is more perfumed to suggest additional ripeness. Very pure intense white fruit, with good acidity, and just a lick of honeysuckle. The whole is very well balanced and will be delicious. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Pale lime and lemon. More electric on the nose with a slight citrus too. Clean white fruit at the front of the palate, more power behind, a good example but not quite the precision of the finest. The finish continues well and shows a riper countenance. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00
