Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (90-92)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from eight parcels from 40 years old to some planted in 1915. Always one of my favorite cuvées from Magnien, this is more defined and energetic than the regular Gevrey, offering Morello cherries, strawberries and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and a mixture of red and black fruit, supple in texture. It is not a concentrated Gevrey but feels very cohesive towards the finish. Give this puppy a couple of years in bottle. |

Vinous (88)The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is aged in 15% new larger 450-liter oak barrels. It has a light nose with yellow plum and touches of ginger, but it needs a little more energy and tension. The palate is better than the nose, lovely and balanced with a slightly honeyed texture. It's not long-term, but it should drink well for the next 3-4 years. |

£395.00 |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from two barrels and is aged in 25% new oak. This is much more complex and nuanced on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes: very focused with ebullient red fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry. It's quite structured for a Chambolle with some firm tannins on the finish, but sufficient fruit keeps it balanced and poised. |

£450.00 |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is more transparent and mineral-driven than the Charmes, the limestone soils flooding through the aromatics, defining them. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and gentle grip. It’s quite energetic with a tensile finish. Once this fills out during the remainder of its barrel maturation, this will be a great Chambolle. |

£270.00 |

Vinous (89-91)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. It's not bad, but it needs to gain some flesh in the coming months. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89)In bottle. A cherry to crimson colour. Fine, pleasing, stylish cherry fruit on the nose, cherry to raspberry on the palate, a little tannin to help the structure, but essentially on the fruit, pure and classy. Drink from 2025-2028. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Lovely glowing purple, this is very sensual with an immediate red fruit charm. Very pretty yet with a fresh intensity, redcurrant and raspberry, above all a sense of purity and energy. This will make a beautiful Chambolle. Drink from 2028-2033. |

£1,880.00 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040. |

Wine Advocate (95-97)The 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru is brilliant, mingling aromas of dark berries and plums with notions of blood orange, rose petals, exotic spices and smoke in an incipiently complex mélange. Full-bodied, deep and complete, it's seamless and multidimensional, its layered core of fruit almost entirely concealing its ample endowment of sweet, powdery tannin. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is one of the highlights of the range this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and exotic spices and framed by a deft application of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with terrific depth, velvety tannins and a long, broad finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)A bright ruby purple. Like the Chambolle the bouquet is all about a primary energy. The Vosne is if anything a tad more precise. Also shows the oak a little more and an extra tannin. Backward, needs more elevage, but very promising. Drink from 2030-2036. |
