Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. In Bond£1,000.00 -

Frédéric Barnier notes that Fuées does not suffer in the dry years whereas the clay in Baudes can block the water supply. A clear pure crimson purple. The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. Mid lemon. The bouquet indicates a surprising breadth of flavour, as if this were a riper spot, and the attack continues in the same fashion, before the wine tightens up at the back in a crystalline fashion, as the stones take over. Very much a food wine, and one which will reward ageing. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£493.00 -

Two separate terroirs, the slope with a little clay topsoil, the plateau just the stones. This shows a little bit of both styles. Broader in the beam, some ripe apple fruits, a little tannic at the finish, fine wine that does not quite challenge the supremacy of En Montceau. Drink from 2026-2032. Three plots which come from maternal grandmother Lucie. Mid lemon yellow, with a very pretty bouquet that gives an immediate desire to drink it. A salivating stony finish, beautifully done. Almost tannic says Damien, and even a little saline. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£370.00 -

Vinous (92)
The 2022 Saint-Aubin Charmois 1er Cru, completely frosted in the previous vintage, has a tightly wound nose with crushed stone filtering through malic fruit. It is Puligny-like, terse as that is appealing, with touches of white tea and chamomile. The palate is well-balanced with impressive tension on the entry, gorgeous flecks of white peach and Satsuma with a prickle of ginger on the finish. Seek this out.In Bond£426.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from several lieux-dits and includes more whole bunches than previous vintages - 60%. That does dominate the aromatics at the moment and covers some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is lightly spiced, somehow just a little conservative towards the finish, where it needs to muster a little more complexity. But it will drink well for 8-10 years. In Bond£395.00 -

25% whole bunch vinification and one new barrel in four. Medium depth of colour with a slightly earthy nose. Quite a solid 1er Cru with the more savoury style of Morey, but not quite convincing. I will take the elegance of En la Rue de Vergy. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£395.00 -

60% whole bunch vinification, no new wood. An even crimson colour. While retaining its earthy style, the fruit is fuller and altogether classier than Clos des Ormes. Strawberry and raspberry, middleweight and with fair length. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£395.00 -

Still in barrel, one new barrel in four. A fine lively mid purple with an exquisite bouquet, ethereal hillside Morey lifted further by the whole bunches (80%). An attractive middleweight red fruit across the palate, with some white pepper to finish. Another excellent wine from this super vineyard. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£300.00 -
Burghound (90-93)
An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long. Lovely and very Chambolle in character. In Bond£450.00 -

(from Les Condemennes, Les Athets and Les Babillières). A more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of spicy red and dark raspberry scents. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish. In Bond£450.00 -

A rich full purple with a plump and stylish fruit, some violets, a generous red fruit, light tannins in place, adequate acidity. Quite a different style of wine after tasting those of Domaine Robert Sirugue, and indeed Arnaud & Sophie. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£550.00 -

Medium deep purple, the most complex of the three. Cherry in the foreground, red berries behind. The fruit soars to the back of the palate, filling the mouth, a light but adequate acidity, and tannins which are well ripened. Then another surge of fruit to finish. Drink from 2029-2035. From five plots. Fresh and quite deep purple. Not much nose at first and then some flowers emerge, including the traditional violets. There are tannins behind, this still needs to resolve, but there is plenty of wine with good acidity behind. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -
