Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from two barrels and is aged in 25% new oak. This is much more complex and nuanced on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes: very focused with ebullient red fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry. It's quite structured for a Chambolle with some firm tannins on the finish, but sufficient fruit keeps it balanced and poised. More Info

Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is more transparent and mineral-driven than the Charmes, the limestone soils flooding through the aromatics, defining them. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and gentle grip. It’s quite energetic with a tensile finish. Once this fills out during the remainder of its barrel maturation, this will be a great Chambolle. More Info

Vinous (89-91) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. It's not bad, but it needs to gain some flesh in the coming months. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) Lovely glowing purple, this is very sensual with an immediate red fruit charm. Very pretty yet with a fresh intensity, redcurrant and raspberry, above all a sense of purity and energy. This will make a beautiful Chambolle. Drink from 2028-2033. More Info

Wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and exotic spices and framed by a deft application of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with terrific depth, velvety tannins and a long, broad finish. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) A bright ruby purple. Like the Chambolle the bouquet is all about a primary energy. The Vosne is if anything a tad more precise. Also shows the oak a little more and an extra tannin. Backward, needs more elevage, but very promising. Drink from 2030-2036. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru was the last cuvée to finish its malolactic fermentation. The nose has more fruit concentration than the Les Chaumes: a mixture of red and black, hints of black truffle coming through with time, and a touch of sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with a tensile opening, very poised and animated with filigree tannins framing the finish. Often overlooked within Grivot's panoply of Vosne Premier Crus, this is one that I would seek out. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. Beautifully generous through the middle, perfumed strawberry and raspberry, with a structure built more on acidity than tannin. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Burghound (90-91) Outstanding Earthier aromas of plum, violet and anise are trimmed in all but invisible wood. There is fine volume to the rich and velvet-textured middleweight flavors that flash good power on the slightly firmer finale that also displays a touch of rusticity. This built-to-age effort is going to need at least a few years of patience. Like the Fixin, this too is worth checking out. More Info

Burghound (89-92) Outstanding top value A very spicy, airy and layered nose freely reveals its aromas of black raspberry, violet, plum and exotic tea. The gorgeously textured and more refined medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality that also seems to add a sense of lift to the balanced and sneaky long finale. This is a lovely Vosne villages and absolutely worth considering. More Info

Jancis Robinson (17.5) Mid cherry red. Bright red-fruited aroma, more cranberry in its impression of freshness. The stems showing in a light herbal note. Stems adding to the tannins on the palate, too, but they are so polished. Needs more time than some to silkify. Pure and deep with a touch of oak spice and sweetness on the very end. Impressive depth of fruit and great length. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine. More Info
