Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)
Mid lemon and lime. A perfumed floral hillside note. Quite lean on the palate but with a fresh drive that keeps the white fruit going through to the back of the palate. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£295.00 -

A small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£440.00 -

The first sample was from a 2018 barrel which marked the wine a little too much. Mid purple. Riper on the nose and has taken the oak a bit more. Try another one. Much better. A sublime weight of perfectly ripe fruit whereas the other seemed over ripe. Excellent. Drink from 2030-2037.In Bond£769.50 -

Six barrels, two of them new. A medium to bright purple. The nose is invigorating with as little as 10% whole bunches, enough to add a floral note. Mid crimson to purple, with some reduction on the nose. A concentrated dark raspberry fruit, still with this reductive element. If and when that clears there is a fine long finish to look forward to instead. Impressive fruit in the end, so scored on the asu, mption that the reduction will clear. Drink from 2028-2034. Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Fresh and even slightly peppery at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in orderIn Bond£1,000.00
