Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous (91) There are just two barrels of the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes 1er Cru, the Domaine's smallest cuvée. Ergo, it is raised in 50% new oak. This is relatively primal on the nose, yet to reveal its personality. Yet, there is plenty of concentration here with an underlying sense of tension. The palate is well-balanced, but as expected, it is oaky at the moment, and it will require 4-5 years to subsume that wood fully. I'll be cautious for the moment. More Info

Vinous (92) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a terroir-driven, minerally bouquet with crushed stone filtering through the orchard fruit and subtle hazelnut and litchi scents developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, perhaps just a little conservative/timid at the moment, precise yet bashful. Hints of rose water and peach skin towards the finish. One of the prettiest cuvées from Fontaine-Gagnard this year. More Info

Vinous (90-92) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot 1er Cru is certainly more flattering on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jean at the moment, with ebullient red berry and blueberry fruit, well-defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s plenty of fleshy red fruit with cracked black pepper and allspice towards the finish. Maybe the Domaine's strongest red this vintage. Very fine. More Info

Vinous (88) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is matured in 20% new oak. It has a generous bouquet with orchard fruit, touches of almond and patisserie. It will require a couple of years to absorb the oak. The palate is well-balanced, with a fine bead of acidity countering the richness, though it needs to muster a little more complexity on the finish. More Info

Vinous (88-90) Matured in 20% new oak, the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge has quite an intense bouquet with dark cherries, blueberry and light violet scents. The palate is well-balanced with a powdery texture, moderate weight, and a little graphite towards the tender but lengthy finish. Give it just a year in bottle. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91) Includes one third of young vines from Chassagne Caillerets. Pale colour with green tints. The bouquet is all in white fruit, a little softer than the trio of St-Aubins. There is good body behind this, filling the palate with white fruit, and going through to a graceful finish. Jancis Robinson (17.5) Cask sample. Oak shows a little more here in the aroma than on most of the Boisset whites. Mealy and spiced and a touch of vanilla. Really creamy and rounded, so generous and caressing but balanced by great freshness. Embryonically delicious with a long, piercing finish. More Info

Jancis Robinson (17) Cask sample. Deep-fruited and spicy, citrus and herbs. Finely creamy texture, deep, long and fresh with a slight sour note at the very end that seems to clash a little with the creamy, fruit-sweet aftertaste. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A glowing pale lime colour. Some restrained floral notes, but not demonstrative. On the palate there is a strong line of chalky white fruit, with a discreet intensity, but clearly adequately ripe. Not a wine to drink young as there is so much more to give. Drink from 2028-2035. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and powdery tannins, the Drouhin's own fully 14 hectares of this prime premier cru, which is divided equally between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) Fresh light lemon colour. The bouquet indicates a little more flesh, as is typical, but not at the expense of precision. As always this is extraordinarily intense on the palate, not yet as fleshy as it will become, but one can see into the future. Fine fruit and acid balance too, of course. 13.7% alcohol which makes sense for Clos des Mouches. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92) The 2022 Beaune Les Cras 1er Cru includes 25% whole clusters, and those really enhance the aromatics, a mixture of red and black fruit and a touch of graphite and loam. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine weight, and a dash of black pepper towards the lingering finish. Wonderful smooth texture here. Worth seeking out. More Info

Plenty of energy but also light on its feet for Morgeot without betraying the appellation, and the fruit persists particularly well on the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru is much more expressive than the Les Theurons and develops a charming, quite discrete, terroir-driven bouquet with dried rose petals infusing the red fruit. The medium-bodied palate has very finely knit tannins and beautifully integrated oak, delineated and quite poised towards the almost Gevrey-like finish. Bon vin. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Beaune Grèves le Clos Blanc 1er Cru follows up its impressive showing last year. There’s wonderful purity on the nose with yellow plum, meringue and wisps of candy floss, yet underneath, you can feel the terroir expression that will come through with time. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine silver bead of acidity. One of the most tensile and energetic of Jadot's whites, with Conference pear and gooseberry popping up on the finish. Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91) The 2022 Beaune Cras 1er Cru was more reduced than the preceding Beaune Grèves and demands more coaxing: darker fruit and a light marine influence at play, but it will need time. The palate is medium-bodied and more muscular than the Grèves. Impressive depth and grip, quite bold towards the finish if missing the same sense of panache. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) A fuller yellow, with a softer nose, almost buttery, rather attractive. This is quite gentle at the front of the palate, gains in weight further behind, with a mix of light acidity and slight youthful bitterness. Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a more airy and floral bouquet than the Embazées, leaning slightly towards Puligny in style. The palate doesn't quite match the promise set by the nose – it is quite weighty and concentrated with an overtly spicy finish. I was expecting more precision here, and I might prefer the previous vintage. More Info
