Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,188.00 -

Vinous (96-98)
The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a slightly deeper and more powerful bouquet than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Exquisite definition and focus—there are more oyster shell scents here. The medium-bodied palate has finely chiseled tannins, a little chalky in texture, building wonderfully to a saline, persistent finish that exudes real breeding. A noble wine in the making. In Bond£1,820.00 -

Glowing purple. The bouquet is absolutely regal. What else to say? The palate offers a fantastic complexity varying from the sweetness of perfect ripeness through to a more savoury character from the terroir. The length of flavour transcends anything else. Gracefulness personified. Drink from 2032-2040.In Bond£1,523.00 -

This is from the excellent Pargues vineyard, vinified and aged in stainless steel. Pale colour. The bouquet has a Chablisian crispness but also the juiciness of this 2022 vintage. Crisply concentrated on the palate, this still needs quite a bit more elevage. Which always needs time as shown by the reductive tang. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

60/40 tank/barrel, not assembled yet. A fine bright mid lemon yellow. A nobility of white fruit across the nose, with considerable intensity on the palate, more trenchant acidity perhaps, fairly full bodied and a long gracious finish. By the time this is bottled in January it should be a very fine wine. The aftertaste is already extremely promising. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£300.00 -

Vinous (95-97)
The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated. In Bond£300.00 -

Clear bright lemon, a powerful and high-class nose, in concentrated white fruit but with a fine sense of balance. This is textbook Vaudésir, a beautiful example, with all the necessary tension alongside a wealth of fruit. The oak is subdued. Fermented in tank then to barrel with no new wood in late March, with two glass wine globes. Crystalline at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£300.00 -

Bright purple. This is beautifully elegant, a lovely balance once again. Instead of being plump up at the front, this is all about the intensity at the back. More in strawberry fruit, with medium plus density at the back, but excellent persistence. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£660.00 -

A substantial cuvée from multiple plots. Fresh bright purple. Concentrated raspberry and bilberry, good acidity, no more than medium bodied but still with energy, redcurrant and raspberry jam behind. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£402.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)
Planted in 1953, with tiny berries on the vines. Rich purple, dark berries on the nose, glossy fruit, nearer to raw than super ripe, fine even fruit across the palate, a little touch of acidity, still so youthful. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£540.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
From Evocelles, En Songes, and below La Justice. 50% whole bunch vinification, 35% new wood. Fairly deep crimson. The stems do lift the nose, dark strawberry with pepper. Really significant weight behind, far from simple strawberry, with balanced tannins, enough acidity and very good persistence. The concentration hides the wood. Drink from 2029-2035. Burghound (94-97)
(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. This is also terrificIn Bond£1,000.00 -

Burghound (91-93)
Moderate wood again frames the fresh and unusually expressive nose of forest floor, the sauvage and various wild red berries. There is impressive concentration to the powerful and tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the very firm finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is already attractively complex and a wine that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 yearsIn Bond£1,000.00
