Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Delight in the exquisite Joblot Givry Prelude Blanc 2022, a masterpiece crafted in the renowned Côte Chalonnaise region of Burgundy, France. Made from handpicked Chardonnay grapes, its creation is centred around preserving the inherent natural characteristics of the fruit while shaping a complex, layered profile.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-93)
A fuller purple than either Arlot cuvée, which is as normal. The bouquet holds the promise of clean fruit at optimum ripeness, but does not deliver detail at this point. Plenty of energy here, some slightly firmer tannins, correct acidity, and then the more perfumed red berry fruit, slightly more raspberry here, returns at the back. Drink from 2030-2037. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)
A mid crimson colour, slightly deeper than Mont des Oiseaux. Rather more pure red fruit on the bouquet. Fine tension, medium plus bodied, more strawberry than raspberry, with an even fruit through to the finish, where the fine tannins and light acidity are in balance. Drink from 2029-2036. A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,100.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. One new barrel in two, 80% whole bunch vinification. Mid crimson red. Quite a dense bouquet, even a little spicy. Brisk red, raspberry and cherry, with a fine depth of flavour and notable persistence. Some Vosne style headiness with Nuits-St-Georges depth. Drink from 2030-2038. From both sides of the village, all destemmed, still in barrel, 20% new wood. Dark in colour with a suggestion of reduction on the nose. An even medium deep fruit on the palate, dark raspberry, quite elegant even, and certainly a clean finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£280.00 -
Burghound (88-90)
(this includes the fruit from the domaine’s .6 ha parcel of Au Bas de Combe as well as fruit from Les Lavières and the villages portion of Aux Grandes Vignes). Here the expressive nose blends hints of cassis and red berry liqueur with those of soft spice and newly turned earth. There is a lovely texture to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that also conclude in a firm, mildly warm and serious but not especially rustic or youthfully austere finishIn Bond£485.00 -

Burghound (90-93)
(from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Lovely and a wine that should be approachable after only 5-ish years yet easily reward a decade plus of cellaringIn Bond£390.00 -

A rich deep purple. At the moment, I am finding that the oak is playing too strong a hand, rather dumbing down the fruit which is certainly there. 45% new wood is not in itself excessive, but it makes the fruit darker and heavier. There is plenty of fruit weight here so this may be a severe rating. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£580.00 -
Discover an extraordinary expression of Burgundian terroir with the Nicolas Faure Nuits-Saint-Georges Herbues 2022. An exciting young talent, Nicolas Faure crafts this phenomenal red from a small patch of vines in the Nuits-Saint-Georges region of eastern France. Influenced by biodynamic practices, Faure works with old vines, ploughs with horses and eschews commercial yeasts, endeavouring to express the unique character of each vintage. The 2022 Herbues offers a complexity beyond its years, revealing layers of ripe dark fruit, damp earth, and aromatic spices. Hand-harvested, fermenting naturally with stems, then matured in oak for 18 months, it is a wine of richness and depth, seamlessly fused with vibrant acidity and supple tannins. The Nicolas Faure Nuits-Saint-Georges Herbues 2022 is a pure, captivating, and ethereal wine that memorably articulates its birthplace's distinctive geography and climate.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)
(5-Star Wine) 100% of both new wood and whole bunch vinification. The Clos de Bèze sits in its own tank apart from the rest of the wines. Must be a bit of a snob I suppose. A solid central core of purple, an imperial robe. Just a soupçon of oak on the nose but obviously the fruit is far more evident. There is indeed an immense weight of dark fruit on the nose, with the whole bunch pepper and spice woven throughout. Excellent weight and density. Rich red roses, along with a sensual dark raspberry, sensuality and structure beautifully interwoven. Drink from 2032-2045+.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)
40% whole bunch vinification. The lowest degree in alcohol. A good purple colour, but a nose which clearly gives less. There is a fine deep raspberry fruit which absolutely fills the palate, then a fresher finish, after which the fruit returns. Very successful. Tannins on their way to full resolution. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
40% whole bunch vinification. Dense rich purple. The nose is startlingly fine in rich dark raspberry fruit. Les St-Georges was hailed on which seems just to concentrate the wine. A massive wealth of fruit, drier at the back than the super saturated front, but that will come better into focus by the end of the elevage. Very promising. A light coffee note? Drink from 2032-2040. Burghound (94-97)
(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. In Bond£1,000.00
