Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Picked between 2nd and 5th September. A very pretty clean lemon and lime. The oak is very well integrated into the classy nose. Plenty of energy but also light on its feet for Morgeot without betraying the appellation, and the fruit persists particularly well on the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99) A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94) Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98) A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. More Info

The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a more airy and floral bouquet than the Embazées, leaning slightly towards Puligny in style. The palate doesn't quite match the promise set by the nose – it is quite weighty and concentrated with an overtly spicy finish. I was expecting more precision here, and I might prefer the previous vintage. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A blend of Abbaye de Morgeot and Francemont. Medium deep yellow. The nose is a little biscuity and a little backward. Then there is surprising weight, largely yellow plum fruit, very good fruit/acid integration, and fair length. This wine does indeed show the power of the Morgeot terroir. Drink from 2030-2038. Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru is habitually one of the Domaine's strongest cards, though this year, it is challenged by the brilliant Caillerets. Still, you cannot deny the nose has excellent mineralité and complexity, with touches of chai and chamomile complementing the yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with great power and precision. Wonderful acidity is interwoven into this Chassagne with great precision and persistence on the finish: elegance and class. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru, which was more or less ready to be bottled, has an attractive bouquet with lemon curd, crushed stone and light praline scents rendering very seductive aromatics. The 30% new oak is very well integrated. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight and tension. Quite edgy, veins of ginger come through on the finish, and there is a conspicuously persistent aftertaste. Very classy. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru was reductive on the nose when I tasted the barrel sample, but that will be addressed by bottling time. There appears to be very good intensity here, and with time, there is an unexpected touch of Shiso leaf. The palate is well-balanced and poised, gently building towards an intense finish, more so than the Chenevottes, with a lingering spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from several lieux-dits and includes more whole bunches than previous vintages - 60%. That does dominate the aromatics at the moment and covers some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is lightly spiced, somehow just a little conservative towards the finish, where it needs to muster a little more complexity. But it will drink well for 8-10 years. More Info
