Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)
From half a dozen plots. A bright and attractive fresh purple. Lively cherries and fresh raspberries on the nose. Slightly more solid than I expected on the palate, with still a dry tannin or two, pretty red fruit, medium length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Bright purple. This is beautifully elegant, a lovely balance once again. Instead of being plump up at the front, this is all about the intensity at the back. More in strawberry fruit, with medium plus density at the back, but excellent persistence. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£660.00 -

A substantial cuvée from multiple plots. Fresh bright purple. Concentrated raspberry and bilberry, good acidity, no more than medium bodied but still with energy, redcurrant and raspberry jam behind. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£402.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)
Planted in 1953, with tiny berries on the vines. Rich purple, dark berries on the nose, glossy fruit, nearer to raw than super ripe, fine even fruit across the palate, a little touch of acidity, still so youthful. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£540.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
From Evocelles, En Songes, and below La Justice. 50% whole bunch vinification, 35% new wood. Fairly deep crimson. The stems do lift the nose, dark strawberry with pepper. Really significant weight behind, far from simple strawberry, with balanced tannins, enough acidity and very good persistence. The concentration hides the wood. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£315.00 -

(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. This is also terrificIn Bond£1,000.00 -

Burghound (91-93)
Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in orderIn Bond£1,000.00 -

Moderate wood again frames the fresh and unusually expressive nose of forest floor, the sauvage and various wild red berries. There is impressive concentration to the powerful and tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the very firm finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is already attractively complex and a wine that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 yearsIn Bond£1,000.00 -

Faiveley pulled out quite a lot after the frost. There is still plenty left to make this wine, though. Solid red crimson colour, with a delicious red fruit nose with its mineral overlay. Alpine strawberries, fair concentration, very detailed, maybe just needs to kick on more at the finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet that completely subsumes the 100% new oak, whilst the 80% whole bunches imparts discrete white pepper and bay leaf notes that enhance the red fruit. The medium-bodied palate is very tensile and focused with finely chiseled tannins and a vibrant, lightly spiced finish with a touch of curry leaf on the aftertaste. Excellent. In Bond£560.00 -

This year, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunches. The nose is refined and composed - perhaps the most mineral-driven and complex, with fabulous delineation. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, perfectly judged acidity, and silky smooth with a perfectly poised finish. Sophisticated and tensile thanks to the limestone soils, this is a great Chambolle in the making. In Bond£560.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Combottes 1er Cru comes from vines up to 70 years old. It has a very expressive bouquet with pure black cherry, tayberry fruit, crushed stone, and light forest floor scents. The medium-bodied palate has good concentration with a mixture of red and black fruit. The new oak is a little dominant towards the finish - it's one cuvée where I feel that less would have revealed the elegance that is here. Let's see how this ages and absorbs the oak.In Bond£480.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuesselottes 1er Cru, which includes 50% whole bunches, has a more backward bouquet with dark berry fruit, clove and light tobacco scents: a little Morey-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and a keen line of acidity, fresh and energetic with a peacock's tail finish. This could well turn out to be Felettig's best cuvée in 2022.In Bond£560.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru, which had just been racked and includes 50% whole bunches, opens wonderfully on the nose: quite minerally, very graceful, wild strawberry, cranberry and blood orange aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit, fine grip, and a touch of bitter cherry lending to the natural energy of this Les Fuées. Matured entirely in new oak, I must admit that the wood drives the finish a little, but that will be assimilated with time. Great potential. In Bond£580.00
