Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from two barrels and is aged in 25% new oak. This is much more complex and nuanced on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes: very focused with ebullient red fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry. It's quite structured for a Chambolle with some firm tannins on the finish, but sufficient fruit keeps it balanced and poised. In Bond£395.00 -

Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is more transparent and mineral-driven than the Charmes, the limestone soils flooding through the aromatics, defining them. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and gentle grip. It’s quite energetic with a tensile finish. Once this fills out during the remainder of its barrel maturation, this will be a great Chambolle. In Bond£450.00 -

Vinous (89-91)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. It's not bad, but it needs to gain some flesh in the coming months. In Bond£270.00 -

Lovely glowing purple, this is very sensual with an immediate red fruit charm. Very pretty yet with a fresh intensity, redcurrant and raspberry, above all a sense of purity and energy. This will make a beautiful Chambolle. Drink from 2028-2033.In Bond£678.00 -

Burghound (90-91)
Outstanding Earthier aromas of plum, violet and anise are trimmed in all but invisible wood. There is fine volume to the rich and velvet-textured middleweight flavors that flash good power on the slightly firmer finale that also displays a touch of rusticity. This built-to-age effort is going to need at least a few years of patience. Like the Fixin, this too is worth checking out.In Bond£425.00 -

Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Mid cherry red. Seductive, sweet-floral, perfumed. Open and expressive. Then deeper and more savoury on the palate. Super-fine tannins with lots of layers so that overall they are slightly chewy. Multilayerd, deeply fruited and very long. A harmonious beauty. In Bond£390.00 -

Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Mid cherry red. Highly perfumed, impression of violets. That perfume leads you to a firmly but finely structured wine – the really elegant tannins are the main quality of the palate at the moment. A refined, pure and elegant beauty. In Bond£325.00 -

Wine Advocate (93-94)
The 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is excellent, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with exotic spices, orange zest and petals. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, its textural attack segues into an unctuous core of fruit, concluding with a long, expansive finish. In Bond£502.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine.In Bond£565.00 -

From the esteemed winemaker comes the exceptional Kei Shiogai Pommard 2022. Produced in the hallowed soils of Burgundy's renowned Pommard region, this exquisite Pinot Noir stands out as a testament to Shiogai's dedication to traditional winemaking. A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,100.00 -

A fine mid ruby colour. The bouquet has both charm and density in a very happy balance. A lovely aftertaste of soft strawberry and fresh raspberry, the graceful side of Pommard with the tannins nicely covered. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£438.00 -

(5 Star Wine) Not too deep in colour, with rather a stylish perfumed raspberry fruit. Light fresh acidity, behind the beautifully balanced fruit, a few tannins too, but the fruit stretches out wonderfully behind them. The benefit of ancient vines is clear to see. Drink from 2030-2036. Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£285.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. In Bond£960.00 -

Frédéric Barnier notes that Fuées does not suffer in the dry years whereas the clay in Baudes can block the water supply. A clear pure crimson purple. The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. A glowing crimson purple, the bouquet comes over with striking class. Quite floral in fact, plenty of sunshine in the fruit but here in Pommard the vine resists better and the tannins are very refined. A delicious aftertaste. The vineyard was only replanted in 2016, so congratulations. It is now in pinot fin and that shows. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£415.00 -
