Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Explore the intricate nuances of the Forey Morey-Saint-Denis Rouge 2022, a treasured offering from the renowned producer Domaine Forey Pere et Fils. Crafted with exquisite attention to detail in the picturesque vineyards of Morey-Saint-Denis, a celebrated appellation within the prestigious Côte de Nuits region, this powerful red reflects the quintessence of Burgundy. This wine is elegantly structured where Pinot Noir grapes are purposefully harvested later for opulent ripe notes.

The Forey Morey-Saint-Denis Rouge 2022 undergoes meticulous vinification in open-top wooden vats, followed by maturation in barrels to enhance complexity. A kaleidoscope of ripe red fruits, intoxicating spices and understated oak are deftly intertwined in its bouquet, gracefully leading to a balanced, lingering finish. Its distinctive style is emblematic of the producer’s dedication to showcasing terroir, subtly embodying the limestone-rich soils and unique microclimate of its home.

Alongside a diverse portfolio, Domaine Forey is universally lauded for their ability to produce world-class wines, like the Forey Morey-Saint-Denis Rouge 2022, that brilliantly express Burgundy's finest virtues.

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with more floral tones than the Les Millandes, wilted violets infusing the black and red fruit, fine mineralité coming from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite fresh and saline, with a cohesive, very "controlled" finish that lends this wine verticality. Very sapid. Give this 3-4 years in bottle.

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is a tiny production matured each year in a single, tailor-made "Aphrodite" barrel from the Cavin cooperage. This vintage is just 400 liters. Because of the very light toasting, the new oak does not impede the aromatics: brambly red berry fruit and fish scale touches. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet and slightly candied opening, offering blood orange-laced fleshy red fruit, with vanilla towards the finish. It is very seductive, and despite the new oak, the structure suggests this will be more approachable than Legros's other cuvées.

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru comes from two parcels, one planted north-south and the other east-west. Its attractive bouquet offers brambly red berry fruit, forest floor and light black truffle scents. There is good complexity here; it is very composed. The palate is well-balanced, with good depth and gentle grip. There is mainly black fruit here with plenty of freshness and mineralité. The finish has commendable precision and feels long and tender. Excellent.

30% new wood, including one 400 litre barrel, which is the way Jean-Pierre will go in future for the first year, and then earthenware jars for the second elevage. A touch of liquorice. This has a much denser texture than used to be the case, and a superb fruit acid balance. Extremely impressive for village Morey blanc. A wine which will develop in time. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: December 2023.

Four barrels made, one new and one each from the three preceding years. A clear pale lemon colour. The opulence of the vineyard shows in a controlled manner on the palate. A little oak shows but it is classy. As with Chartron’s other wines, there is a complementary acidity which helps the balance. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

A pale colour with a lime tint. Backward but powerful, as it should be. Taking time to build on the palate, with a mineral thread of acidity, pure white fruit, expertly poised. There may be weightier examples around, but this is certainly very fine. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)

This cuvée no longer contains Clos des Lambrays young vines. The plot called 30 rangs (planted 2000) was in this wine up to 2021. La Riotte and Le Village remain, the 20 ares of Clos Sorbe has been added to new vineyards (see below) from Domaine Cosson, but instead there is fruit from half a hectare of Les Blanchards, also ex Cosson. Glowing purple. A beautifully lifted bouquet with 40% whole bunches, alpine strawberries, all in finesse. Then the wine builds to an extra level of intensity, more than expected from the elegance of the nose, The fruit shows additional nuances as well, entirely red fruit, some ripe cherries now showing as well. Just a few spices to finish.

A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a mineral-driven, obdurate nose that you might presume derives from a cooler growing season. Subtle petrichor/wet pavement aromas intermix with sea spray. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely creamy texture, vanilla mixed with orange rind and tangerine. There’s fine depth, though I prefer the precision of the VIrondot and Caillerets. However, it will surely mature beautifully in bottle.

25% whole bunch vinification and one new barrel in four. Medium depth of colour with a slightly earthy nose. Quite a solid 1er Cru with the more savoury style of Morey, but not quite convincing. I will take the elegance of En la Rue de Vergy. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.

60% whole bunch vinification, no new wood. An even crimson colour. While retaining its earthy style, the fruit is fuller and altogether classier than Clos des Ormes. Strawberry and raspberry, middleweight and with fair length. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.

Still in barrel, one new barrel in four. A fine lively mid purple with an exquisite bouquet, ethereal hillside Morey lifted further by the whole bunches (80%). An attractive middleweight red fruit across the palate, with some white pepper to finish. Another excellent wine from this super vineyard. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.
