Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Five barrels. Fresh lemon and lime. A very pure clean white fruit on the palate. More perfumed than mineral at the outset. A generous concentrated white fruit across the palate, ripe apples in particular, well backed by its oak, with good length too. To bottle in April 2024. Drink from 2029-2037. 5 Star Wine. Racked to tank but this has fallen clear. This has the most elegant bouquet of the three wines. This is beautiful also on the palate, with a delicious fruit throughout. Jean-Yves thinks that the 2022 is his best yet and because he has enough yield which gives greater finesse than years where the vine has struggled. This is fine-boned with perfectly judged ripeness, and will doubtless add further tension over the next few months – though otherwise seems most attractive to drink now. Very complementary oaking. Drink from 2025-2030.In Bond£300.00 -

From domaine fruit, picked on 26th August. 35% new wood from various forests. A deeper lemon yellow. Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. I don’t find it showing at its best today but I suspect that there is more to this to emerge later. A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,100.00 -

Recently stirred so cloudy. Affects the bouquet too, so that is hard to judge. Unquestioned weight, plenty of energy, the lees with the wood shows more at the finish. No reason why this should not be an excellent wine. Another sample was produced, representing the component raised in foudre only, 10 barrels worth, so one third of the whole, has a clear pale lemon and lime colour. The fruit is clearly ripe but with no signs of exotic fruit. This fills the palate beautifully, a little citrus, enough white fruit flesh and then a long stony finish. Absolutely what it should be, and in 2022 something more. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£655.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. 90% is from the Pernand. Side, a third old vines, a third 20 year old, a third 35 year old. And guess what, the youngest are in the worst condition. Some tressed, some worked by winch. Pale colour, a beautifully mineral nose, properly shows its terroir. The wine picks up speed further back on the palate, opening out very nicely. Very attractive. Drink from 2029-2037. (from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. In Bond£1,000.00 -

From the lower part of Le Charlemagne. There is a regular cuvee too. Lively fresh primrose. At the moment the oak shows a little stronger than the wine on the first nose.
