Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)
The 2022 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is quite backward on the nose and demands a bit of coaxing. Eventually, it reveals red apple, lemon verbena and light petrichor scents, though I would not describe it as "intense." The palate is well-balanced and elegant in style. It is not a powerful Grand Cru, but crisp, precise and almost delicate towards the finish. I suspect it will gain more weight by the time of bottling. In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year.In Bond£1,550.00 -
Arnoux Pere et Fils Chorey-les-Beaune 2022 is an exquisite Burgundy wine that speaks volumes about the French art of vinification. This magnificent red is a product of the renowned Arnoux Pere et Fils estate, located in the heart of Burgundy, a region famed for its grand cru vineyards. The wine exhibits a profusion of aromas, including ripe cherry, raspberry, and accents of sous bois.
It is crafted predominantly from Pinot Noir, adhering to meticulous viticultural practices that reflect the true character of the grape. The distinct terroir imparts a delicate minerality that balances the vibrant fruit flavours. The 2022 vintage's maturation process has given it a complex structure with manageable tannins and a rounded, opulent finish.
Reflective of the winery's long-standing tradition in producing world-class wines, the Arnoux Pere et Fils Chorey-les-Beaune 2022 embodies the essence of fine Burgundy - pure, elegant and impressionable on the palate. An unforgettable experience for the discerning wine enthusiast.

Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,188.00 -

Mid lemon yellow. Some delicacy, without disputing the imminent power. A pure bench of fresh white fruit, actually this is more about nuances than power, though it maintains energy all the way through, to a fine long finish. Love the tension, and the finesse, while some other versions may be more intense. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Burghound (94-97)
(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. This is also terrificIn Bond£1,000.00 -

(5 Star Wine) 10% new wood, about to be bottled. A similar rich crimson purple colour. A savoury and stylish deep red fruit on the nose, with spice behind. A pretty fantastic example of Chorey with life and depth, dark cherry fruit. Excellent tension, I think this will be gorgeous. Long, fine and sensual. Drink from 2026-2030. A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,100.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Pale colour with a lime tint. The bouquet indicates some power but no detail, as yet. Lush white fruit with a slightly honeyed note, continues well across the palate, a little toast and just enough acidity. The aftertaste continues quite well, while showing the riper aspects. Not quite as deep a purple and the nose is a little more refined, less exuberant. There is no shortage of quality fruit on the palate, dark raspberry, a few more tannins, but they are ripe enough. The fruit covers the final structure very nicely. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Burghound (94-97)
(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. In Bond£1,000.00 -

(5 Star Wine) One barrel, not new. A pale primrose with a startlingly fine and pure bouquet. Magical. There is a refined yet exceptionally intense pure fruit, with a saline and citrus touch behind. Ultra stylish and very pure. The finish extends beautifully behind. Bravo! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -
