Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,188.00 -

The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a slightly deeper and more powerful bouquet than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Exquisite definition and focus—there are more oyster shell scents here. The medium-bodied palate has finely chiseled tannins, a little chalky in texture, building wonderfully to a saline, persistent finish that exudes real breeding. A noble wine in the making. In Bond£1,820.00 -

This is from the excellent Pargues vineyard, vinified and aged in stainless steel. Pale colour. The bouquet has a Chablisian crispness but also the juiciness of this 2022 vintage. Crisply concentrated on the palate, this still needs quite a bit more elevage. Which always needs time as shown by the reductive tang. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

60/40 tank/barrel, not assembled yet. A fine bright mid lemon yellow. A nobility of white fruit across the nose, with considerable intensity on the palate, more trenchant acidity perhaps, fairly full bodied and a long gracious finish. By the time this is bottled in January it should be a very fine wine. The aftertaste is already extremely promising. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£300.00 -

The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated. In Bond£300.00 -

Clear bright lemon, a powerful and high-class nose, in concentrated white fruit but with a fine sense of balance. This is textbook Vaudésir, a beautiful example, with all the necessary tension alongside a wealth of fruit. The oak is subdued. Fermented in tank then to barrel with no new wood in late March, with two glass wine globes. Crystalline at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£300.00 -

One of the slightly darker purple colours, with a ripe and dark edged fruit. I sense the whole bunches more here than in the Clos Vougeot. Becomes more nuanced further back on the palate, with greater energy to the fruit. I was not sure from the nose but the palate works with a good balance between the slightly riper fruit profile and the acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,500.00 -

Just as deep a purple colour but more elegance on the nose, less obviously and immediately sumptuous. Wavelets of alpine strawberry and its raspberry equivalent dance across the palate, super fine, with startling elegance. Another 2022 beauty from Thomas. Drink from 2030-2038.In Bond£1,222.00 -

From the upper part of Les Treux. Glowing purple. The nose is discreet. The palate does the Echezeaux latticework thing with lots of detail, and exceptional length. Goes on dancing, tiptoeing, across the palate for a long time. Just one barrel. The fruit stays with me. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£798.00 -

(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. 30% whole bunch vinification. The colour is more purple than crimson. The bouquet is extremely elegant and shows some concentration. A slightly firm finish at the moment but the elevage is not finished yet, and this should be resolved with extra time. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

From Les Treux. 50% whole bunches on younger vines, which were planted in 2001. A deep and even purple. This is very substantial, rather a classic Felettig, less nuanced than some though certainly with a fine depth of flavour. No doubt about the density, has it just surrendered a touch of elegance?
