Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Made up from 16 different plots. A pale lemon colour. The nose is undemonstrative but one senses the concentration behind. Indeed, the fruit builds to the back of the palate with a little ripe citrus and correct acidity. Fine length, a little more interest than the very capable Puligny. Drink from 2029-2034. Some light green reflections in the primrose yellow colour. A stricter nose, perhaps a touch of sulphur. This may also appear more backward coming after the Charmes. Then a vast wealth of fruit on the palate and now we see the real wine. It maintains the herbal note I associate with Genevrières, alongside golden fruit at a perfect degree of ripeness. The fruit and the acidity weave in and out of each other. I would not want the fruit to be riper but it is full of charm as it stands, and kept in place by the precision of the structure. Very fine. Drink from 2029-2037.In Bond£636.00 -

Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. The white fruit continues on the palate and is now joined by a saline note, while the ripe apples give an immediate appeal. There are little waves of flavour towards the back of the palate. Once again the aftertaste is fine, precise and thoroughly promising. Drink from 2027-2032.In Bond£511.00 -

A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,100.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. No deeper in colour than its stable mates but broader in bouquet, offering a fleshy white fruit. The balance here is impeccable on the palate, with fine acidity behind that supports the generosity of fruit. A good example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£230.00 -

A little more power to the nose ahead of its stablemates Charmes and Genevrières, indeed much more backward. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. This has an impressively broad density of fruit behind, the detail not yet being expressed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£265.00 -

Pale in colour, the nose displaying a slight green hazelnut reduction which is not at all unpleasant. Indeed, it adds tension to the wine. There is impressive weight on the palate, some concentrated plum and greengage, good acidity. This still needs more elevage but shows promise. Drink from 2028-2035. The Meix Chavaux is blended between 350 and 600 litre barrels. Very attractive lemon and lime colour, with a racy characterful nose, fresh apple, a little lime blossom, fresh energy throughout. I love the graceful yet lifted quality of this wine. It should fill out later on, but is already clearly on the right road. We also tried the same wine, but racked back to barrel to see what a longer elevage will look like. A little more yellow in the colour, while the nose is rounder, showing the wood only in terms of weight not of taste. Fills out the middle in the way I was looking for from the main wine. Either way, Meix Chavaux is a big step up. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£438.00 -

Still in barrel. A gorgeous lemon and lime colour with a striking bouquet, the herbal side is fully there, plus an intensity which never oversteps the mark. Body and class together. Weighty and enticing at the same time. Very well done. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£680.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with mineral-driven citrus fruit and hints of honeysuckle developing in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with a sapid entry. A little resinous in texture, there is plenty of extract, underlying the complex, stem ginger and lemon thyme-tinged finish. Give this plenty of bottle age, and there is very good potential. In Bond£525.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has an intense, minerally bouquet with touches of chalk, yellow plum and light blood orange aromas. The palate is well-balanced, one of Bouzereau's more powerful cuvées with impressive persistence and a sapid aftertaste. The pedigree of the terroir really comes through in this Meursault. In Bond£675.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)
The 2022 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a typical Perrières bouquet with crushed rock/flint percolating through the veneer of slightly tropical fruit. It takes time to settle in the glass. The palate is harmonious with bright acidity, a much more elegant style of Perrières with a creamy finish that lingers in the mouth. That build in the mouth is deeply impressive, although it retains composure and finesse from start to finish. In Bond£840.00 -

An attractive racy pale primrose. The bouquet is fully of energy, this is not too heavy a Charmes, but a fine one. The palate offers an excellent weight of fruit, ripe apples, a little fresh plum, very good grip and a long finish. Smart stuff! In Bond£600.00 -

Vinous (90-92)
The 2022 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, matured in 20% new oak, has quite an engaging bouquet, with hints of wild fennel and mint infusing citrus fruit. Impressive delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a silver bead of acidity. Linear in style, there is no peacock's tail towards the finish, but plenty of spiciness, a touch of Szechuan pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the aftertaste. Recommended. In Bond£270.00 -
