Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£370.00 -

Not in bottle. Two plots, one of old vines at the southern end, one at the north, slightly younger and more productive. An elegant and charming bouquet which continues across the palate, with a fine crunchy acidity to finish. May not call attention to itself, but it is fine. Drink from 2027-2034. This is from the excellent Pargues vineyard, vinified and aged in stainless steel. Pale colour. The bouquet has a Chablisian crispness but also the juiciness of this 2022 vintage. Crisply concentrated on the palate, this still needs quite a bit more elevage. Which always needs time as shown by the reductive tang. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

60/40 tank/barrel, not assembled yet. A fine bright mid lemon yellow. A nobility of white fruit across the nose, with considerable intensity on the palate, more trenchant acidity perhaps, fairly full bodied and a long gracious finish. By the time this is bottled in January it should be a very fine wine. The aftertaste is already extremely promising. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£300.00 -

The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated. In Bond£300.00 -

Clear bright lemon, a powerful and high-class nose, in concentrated white fruit but with a fine sense of balance. This is textbook Vaudésir, a beautiful example, with all the necessary tension alongside a wealth of fruit. The oak is subdued. Fermented in tank then to barrel with no new wood in late March, with two glass wine globes. Crystalline at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£300.00 -

(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. The 2022 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru takes a little more time to open on the nose than Picq's other cuvées but eventually reveals eucalyptus-tinged citrus fruit flanked by wet stone aromas. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, very saline but with a countervailing, almost honeyed element keeping this on its toes. This is a brilliant follow-up to the 2021.In Bond£288.00 -

Outstanding Top Value An expressive, fresh and ripe nose freely offers up its aromas of mostly white orchard fruit and floral wisps that possess plenty of classic Chablis typicity. The nicely rich and attractively vibrant middleweight flavors exude a subtle salinity on the clean, dry and sneaky long finish. This is lovely for its level and worth considering. In Bond£174.00 -

At the moment, the 2022 Chablis Au Dessus des Carrières is stoic on the nose compared to Picq's other cuvées, despite both of us giving our glasses vigorous swirls. The palate is where the action is: great concentration and depth, hints of white peach and nectarine, the power loaded at its back end. Give this two or three years in bottle. In Bond£204.00 -

Outstanding Top Value Once again there is a smoky character to the cool aromas of shellfish, apple and prominent iodine and quinine nuances. There is excellent complexity to the beautifully textured flavors thanks to the abundant dry extract as the old vines are clearly present on the stony and impressively long finale. Like all of these villages-level wines, this boxes well above its weight and is also warmly recommended. In Bond£210.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Clos Richemont 1er Cru is a dense, opulent white built on texture more than anything else. It is one of the most overt wines in the Boillot range. Orange jam, spice, vanillin, lemon confit and baked apple tart infuse the 2022 with tons of textural intensity. This is such a distinctive wine.In Bond£430.00 -

Just bottled. A pretty, light lemon colour. A pleasing fragrance with spring flowers and the lighter side of plum fruit. Generous on the palate with a graphite touch which is probably the oak speaking, a wealth of fruit through the middle and enough flesh to cover the final point of acidity. Fine length as ever. The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is.In Bond£455.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Les Poruzots 1er Cru marries fruit intensity with drive. It’s a combination that works so well here. Then again, that is a signature of this part of the vineyard. Crushed rocks, lemon peel, mint, white pepper and light tropical notes all come alive with some time in the glass. In Bond£680.00 -

5 Star Wine. All domaine fruit now, from Les Chevalières, Luraule. Pelles, Casses Têtes, Petits Charrons. Pale to medium lemon yellow. A generous bouquet speaking clearly of Meursault. A broad bench of ripe white apple fruit with excellent energy, good acidity behind, and notable persistence. Very Meursault and quite delicious. Drink from 2027-2034.
