Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (87-89)
(the name refers to a small tower located just behind the domaine; the fruit comes from 6 different lieux-dits). A more floral-suffused nose presents a range of aromas that include violet, dark currant and black cherry. The very supple and fleshy middleweight flavors possess a seductive texture while exhibiting enough depth and persistence on the balanced finale to be interesting. This too could easily be enjoyed youngIn Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes has discrete touches of fish scale and black olive on the nose, married neatly with the black fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry. Touches of fig and dates tincture the black fruit. Was this picked just a day or two later than optimal? It feels too sweet for my liking and compared to the previous vintage. In Bond£288.00 -

Attractive mid crimson purple. A little more reserved on the nose yet with swelling fruit across the palate, a little fresh pepper at the finish which just enlivens the wine and adds a mineral touch. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£235.00 -

Burghound (86-88)
Bright, fresh and airy aromas of both red and dark pinot fruit are trimmed in discreet earth hints. There is good vibrancy to the delicious middleweight flavors that are shaped by fine-grained tannins on the lightly stony and dusty but not really austere finale. To enjoy after a few years of keeping. In Bond£185.00 -

The Bourgogne Blanc comes from La Bergerie in Puligny (two thirds) the rest from Lombois below Volnay. A light but pure white fruit. Nicely balanced all across the palate with a fresh acidity to finish, and good length. Very attractive with just the right oaking. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£216.00 -

A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)
The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is one of the most backward reds from Jadot in barrel, but I managed to eke out some attractive raspberry, crushed strawberry and sous-bois aromas that look promising. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity and a surprisingly dense finish just needing to forage a little more mineralité. Good potential, but it will require 3 or 4 yearIn Bond£130.00 -

One of the lighter wines in colour. A pretty, almost floral bouquet. Nothing sturdy here but it is extremely pleasing. Not full but not weak, not long but with an adequate finish. Just a really pretty wine for spring and early summer. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£130.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. From the Couchey end of the appellation, still in barrel. A solid crimson red. 35% whole bunch vinification adds some rose petals to the flavour profile.
