Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark plum, raspberry coulis, incense and light sous-bois scents. It takes quite a few swirls of the glass to get the aromas going. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, assertive opening. The tannins are slightly chalky, lending this Corton-Pougets edginess/nerve. Fine mineralité towards the finish yet tightly wound and almost curmudgeonly in its nascent state, this Grand Cru will demand long-term agin |

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is one of the most backward reds from Jadot in barrel, but I managed to eke out some attractive raspberry, crushed strawberry and sous-bois aromas that look promising. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity and a surprisingly dense finish just needing to forage a little more mineralité. Good potential, but it will require 3 or 4 year |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)A mid ruby crimson colour. There is a greater depth of pure red strawberry/raspberry fruit with a suggestion of some grip. Definitely enough structure behind but this is still fruit forward. Very nicely made. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)From the Couchey end of the appellation, still in barrel. A solid crimson red. 35% whole bunch vinification adds some rose petals to the flavour profile. Otherwise, there is slightly less density than for the Côte de Nuits Villages. Good acidity to infuse the finish. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: December 2023. |

The Moron-Garcia Corton Baie Par Baie 2022 is a splendid dedication to the French winemaking tradition, originating from the prized vineyards of Burgundy. Its creator, Moron-Garcia, utilises strict selection, baie par baie (berry by berry), a meticulous approach which contributes to its remarkable quality. The wine is soaked and fermented at controlled temperatures to maximize the expression of its fruit. Then aged in oak adds depth and complexity, highlighting its intricate flavours. Boasting a brilliant ruby hue, it offers a delightful bouquet of red fruits, intense spices, and subtle hints of oak. On the palate, it exudes a harmonious balance of acidity, tannins, and alcohol, culminating in a spectacular long finish disclosing layers of taste. The Moron-Garcia Corton Baie Par Baie 2022 is a testament to the vibrant expression of the Corton terroir. Decanter (95)The delicious Corton Bressandes has long been a favourite in this cellar. It is produced from a large (0.80 hectare) parcel that Pacalet rents, planted with 80-year-old massale selection vines at very high density. The vines give a small yield but very concentrated fruit that Pacalet ferments gently as whole clusters to deliver this intense, powerful wine that retains surprising elegance and finesse for such a substantial wine. The ripe mulberry and plum fruit aromas are hedged with earth and savoury game notes; the texture is tannic and compact. This Bressandes should open in five to seven years and drink well for decades. |

Burghound (94-97)(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Corton-Perrières Grand Cru contains 70% whole bunches this year. It has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with violets and iris flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and slightly chalky in texture. This feels focused and quite persistent on the finish. It is very promising and certainly a step up from the 2021. |
