Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
From Les Treux. 50% whole bunches on younger vines, which were planted in 2001. A deep and even purple. This is very substantial, rather a classic Felettig, less nuanced than some though certainly with a fine depth of flavour. No doubt about the density, has it just surrendered a touch of elegance? Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£1,765.00 -
Embodying the heights of French viticulture, the Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 is a true gem of superior wine. Clustered in the acclaimed region of Burgundy, this wine captures the characteristic subtlety and depth of Pinot Noir. Taking advantage of the remarkable terroir at Clos Vougeot, its development is carefully overseen by the eponymous Gros siblings, whose family legacy in winemaking has extended over a glorious century.
Firmly rooted on slopes blanketed with limestone clay, their vague pronunciation is an ode to meticulous cultivation, traditional vinification methods, and an enduring respect for nature. Aged in French oak, it offers an ethereal bouquet of cherry and plum interspersed with earthy undertones. On the palate, this wine displays immense structure and complexity, met with a soft elegance and a lasting finish that illustrates the emblem of the 'Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022'. A symphony in a bottle, it unquestionably validates the prestige of Burgundy wines.

Imbued with the rich heritage of Gros Frère et Soeur, the Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022 speaks volumes of this esteemed French vineyard's meticulous craftsmanship. This wine originates from Vosne-Romanée, a small commune in the heart of Burgundy, renowned for creating some of the world's most expensive and premium wines. Harvested from historic, old-vine plantings, the Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022 exemplifies perfect ripeness, the grapes crushed with care and fermented using natural yeast. Possessing an alluring bouquet of ripe berries, balanced oak and subtle spice, its taste belies deep layers of complexity. On the palate, one can expect a symphony of earthy undertones, embraced by velvety tannins and a long-lasting finish. The Gros Frère et Soeur house, long celebrated for their wine-making prowess, have surpassed expectations yet again with the Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022, cementing their position among the custodians of Burgundy's fine wine tradition.

(5 Star Wine) 100% new Tronçais wood, for April bottling. A deep central core of purple. Very intense indeed without being clumsy. There is a massive structure here to build on, but it is all about the intensity of the fruit. Deep red not black, almost as thrilling as the 2020 Echezeaux. Waves more fruit come flooding back across the palate, with everything in perfect proportion. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,025.00 -

100% mixed forests, to bottle in April. Fine mid purple. The nose is not so drop dead stunning as the Clos Vougeot but it is still impressive, and then the palate delivers yet more. Some rose petals, some vibrant deep red fruit, chiselled and intense at the same time, nuanced without latticework. Then a firm structure. Looks like becoming a great wine but under the cosh from the Clos Vougeot this year. But there is a breadth of fruit here nonetheless. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£3,545.00 -

Purple in the centre with a lighter rim. The nose speaks a little of its oak and a lot of its fruit, a riper style of red berries, yet with good acidity behind, indeed quite fresh at the finish after a slight heaviness up front. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.In Bond£1,248.00 -

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle and black pepper. It's quite complex and very long on the finish. Superb. In Bond£765.00 -

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a vivid, bright bouquet with perfumed, very floral red berry fruit and touches of white flowers filtering through with time in the glass. Quite classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, slightly tarry black and red fruit, hints of black pepper and graphite towards a complex, engaging finish. SuperIn Bond£1,425.00 -

100% new wood. Dense dark purple, the nose currently dominated by the oak, but it will integrate well without any sign of drying the ample fruit. We cannot see the detail yet but the 2022 Echezeaux finishes gracefully, with finesse. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£980.00 -

Light to mid crimson. Intoxicating, floral-layered red fruit with a touch of pepper. On the palate, entirely seductive with intense and pure dark-red fruits. Excellent combination of concentration, freshness and length. Then a savoury aftertaste all tangled up in the tannic elegance. In Bond£1,415.00 -

A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,100.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Glowing fresh crimson colour. The nose shows fresh fruit without detail as yet. I am impressed by the weight and energy of this very promising Clos Vougeot There is plenty up front, muscular, but enough behind too. A beautiful finish as pure class peeps throughout. The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and touches of lavender, complementing the vivacious red fruit. It is an archetypal Echézeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It’s quite peppery towards the finish, so you might misconstrue it as containing some whole bunches. Very satisfying complexity on the finish; this is an excellent Eche.In Bond£695.00 -

(from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated styleIn Bond£780.00 -

Another rich dark colour. Half new wood, but it seems to dominate much less here than it did in the Boudots. There is plenty of substance but the desirable Echezeaux nuances are there too. Give this time to refine and I think it will make an excellent Echezeaux. Drink from 2032-2039. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£1,575.00 -
