Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous (87) The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc offers bright orchard fruit, particularly orange blossom, on the nose that will be difficult to resist in its youth. The palate is rounded with a smooth texture, lightly spiced with a dab of lemongrass perking up the finish. Delightful regional white Burgundy. More Info

Quite a solid 1er Cru with the more savoury style of Morey, but not quite convincing. I will take the elegance of En la Rue de Vergy. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94) 60% whole bunch vinification, no new wood. An even crimson colour. While retaining its earthy style, the fruit is fuller and altogether classier than Clos des Ormes. Strawberry and raspberry, middleweight and with fair length. Drink from 2030-2037.
