Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-89)Attractive mid crimson purple. A little more reserved on the nose yet with swelling fruit across the palate, a little fresh pepper at the finish which just enlivens the wine and adds a mineral touch. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle and black pepper. It's quite complex and very long on the finish. Superb. |

Burghound (86-88)Bright, fresh and airy aromas of both red and dark pinot fruit are trimmed in discreet earth hints. There is good vibrancy to the delicious middleweight flavors that are shaped by fine-grained tannins on the lightly stony and dusty but not really austere finale. To enjoy after a few years of keeping. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Light to mid crimson. Intoxicating, floral-layered red fruit with a touch of pepper. On the palate, entirely seductive with intense and pure dark-red fruits. Excellent combination of concentration, freshness and length. Then a savoury aftertaste all tangled up in the tannic elegance. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88)The Bourgogne Blanc comes from La Bergerie in Puligny (two thirds) the rest from Lombois below Volnay. A light but pure white fruit. Nicely balanced all across the palate with a fresh acidity to finish, and good length. Very attractive with just the right oaking. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)5 Star Wine. Racked to tank but this has fallen clear. This has the most elegant bouquet of the three wines. This is beautiful also on the palate, with a delicious fruit throughout. Jean-Yves thinks that the 2022 is his best yet and because he has enough yield which gives greater finesse than years where the vine has struggled. This is fine-boned with perfectly judged ripeness, and will doubtless add further tension over the next few months – though otherwise seems most attractive to drink now. Very complementary oaking. Drink from 2025-2030. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)One of the lighter wines in colour. A pretty, almost floral bouquet. Nothing sturdy here but it is extremely pleasing. Not full but not weak, not long but with an adequate finish. Just a really pretty wine for spring and early summer. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)Glowing fresh crimson colour. The nose shows fresh fruit without detail as yet. I am impressed by the weight and energy of this very promising Clos Vougeot There is plenty up front, muscular, but enough behind too. A beautiful finish as pure class peeps throughout. Very happy with this! Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (87)The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc offers bright orchard fruit, particularly orange blossom, on the nose that will be difficult to resist in its youth. The palate is rounded with a smooth texture, lightly spiced with a dab of lemongrass perking up the finish. Delightful regional white Burgundy. |

Burghound (91-94)(from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated style |
