Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Tressage here, no tractor for years so as to avoid compacting the very light soil. One barrel, magnums only. Mid ruby with clearly a riper more perfumed style of fruit. Even a slight plum note to the perfume, then stonier and more saline on the palate. The fruit leaves a sweet impression in the mouth. Super fruit concentration behind. Drink from 2030-2036. Sweet spot Outstanding. A slightly more elegant nose combines notes of red cherry and raspberry with discreet touches of earth and discreet wood. The slightly finer and succulent middleweight flavors possess very good verve while exhibiting very fine depth and persistence on the first, dusty, youthfully austere and built-to-age finale. Once again, patience strongly suggested as this should make for a beautiful bottle in time.In Bond£860.00 -

Bright ruby in colour. The nose shows a touch of reduction. Nutty and cherries, there is rather good intensity on the palate, a line of intense cherries, no sign of the reduction here. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

The first sample was from a 2018 barrel which marked the wine a little too much. Mid purple. Riper on the nose and has taken the oak a bit more. Try another one. Much better. A sublime weight of perfectly ripe fruit whereas the other seemed over ripe. Excellent. Drink from 2030-2037.In Bond£762.00 -

Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Fresh and even slightly peppery at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

In bottle since end October. Mostly from Les Porlottes, which is higher and cooler and the last to be picked, plus also the small holdings of 1ers crus Baudes and Fuées. A glowing purple with quite a dark centre. Fully ripe but not unduly heady dark raspberry fruit, with a fine concentration of fruit. Dark notes include bilberries but also an excellent mineral freshness. Fine length, a very fine example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Derived almost exclusively from lieu-dit Les Draze, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, cherries, rose petals and baking spices. Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in orderIn Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is missing the same cohesion and presence as the Latricières at the moment, though it has an attractive rose bush/potpourri scent that emerges with time. The medium-bodied palate has a tad more angularity than the Latricières and fine mineralité, edgy and linear with a strict, tensile, lightly spiced finish. What you might term a "grower", aloof, but the sapidity draws you back. Excellent. In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet that completely subsumes the 100% new oak, whilst the 80% whole bunches imparts discrete white pepper and bay leaf notes that enhance the red fruit. The medium-bodied palate is very tensile and focused with finely chiseled tannins and a vibrant, lightly spiced finish with a touch of curry leaf on the aftertaste. Excellent. In Bond£560.00 -

This year, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunches. The nose is refined and composed - perhaps the most mineral-driven and complex, with fabulous delineation. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, perfectly judged acidity, and silky smooth with a perfectly poised finish. Sophisticated and tensile thanks to the limestone soils, this is a great Chambolle in the making. In Bond£560.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Combottes 1er Cru comes from vines up to 70 years old. It has a very expressive bouquet with pure black cherry, tayberry fruit, crushed stone, and light forest floor scents. The medium-bodied palate has good concentration with a mixture of red and black fruit. The new oak is a little dominant towards the finish - it's one cuvée where I feel that less would have revealed the elegance that is here. Let's see how this ages and absorbs the oak.In Bond£480.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuesselottes 1er Cru, which includes 50% whole bunches, has a more backward bouquet with dark berry fruit, clove and light tobacco scents: a little Morey-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and a keen line of acidity, fresh and energetic with a peacock's tail finish. This could well turn out to be Felettig's best cuvée in 2022.In Bond£560.00
