Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is more transparent and mineral-driven than the Charmes, the limestone soils flooding through the aromatics, defining them. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and gentle grip. It’s quite energetic with a tensile finish. Once this fills out during the remainder of its barrel maturation, this will be a great Chambolle. In Bond£450.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. It's not bad, but it needs to gain some flesh in the coming months. In Bond£270.00 -

Lovely glowing purple, this is very sensual with an immediate red fruit charm. Very pretty yet with a fresh intensity, redcurrant and raspberry, above all a sense of purity and energy. This will make a beautiful Chambolle. Drink from 2028-2033.In Bond£678.00 -

Outstanding Earthier aromas of plum, violet and anise are trimmed in all but invisible wood. There is fine volume to the rich and velvet-textured middleweight flavors that flash good power on the slightly firmer finale that also displays a touch of rusticity. This built-to-age effort is going to need at least a few years of patience. Like the Fixin, this too is worth checking out.In Bond£425.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine.In Bond£565.00 -

This cuvée no longer contains Clos des Lambrays young vines. The plot called 30 rangs (planted 2000) was in this wine up to 2021. La Riotte and Le Village remain, the 20 ares of Clos Sorbe has been added to new vineyards (see below) from Domaine Cosson, but instead there is fruit from half a hectare of Les Blanchards, also ex Cosson. Glowing purple. A beautifully lifted bouquet with 40% whole bunches, alpine strawberries, all in finesse. Then the wine builds to an extra level of intensity, more than expected from the elegance of the nose, The fruit shows additional nuances as well, entirely red fruit, some ripe cherries now showing as well. Just a few spices to finish. In Bond£630.00 -

Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£285.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. In Bond£960.00 -

Frédéric Barnier notes that Fuées does not suffer in the dry years whereas the clay in Baudes can block the water supply. A clear pure crimson purple. The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from several lieux-dits and includes more whole bunches than previous vintages - 60%. That does dominate the aromatics at the moment and covers some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is lightly spiced, somehow just a little conservative towards the finish, where it needs to muster a little more complexity. But it will drink well for 8-10 years. In Bond£395.00 -

25% whole bunch vinification and one new barrel in four. Medium depth of colour with a slightly earthy nose. Quite a solid 1er Cru with the more savoury style of Morey, but not quite convincing. I will take the elegance of En la Rue de Vergy. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£395.00 -

60% whole bunch vinification, no new wood. An even crimson colour. While retaining its earthy style, the fruit is fuller and altogether classier than Clos des Ormes. Strawberry and raspberry, middleweight and with fair length. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£395.00 -

Still in barrel, one new barrel in four. A fine lively mid purple with an exquisite bouquet, ethereal hillside Morey lifted further by the whole bunches (80%). An attractive middleweight red fruit across the palate, with some white pepper to finish. Another excellent wine from this super vineyard. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£300.00 -
Burghound (90-93)
An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long. Lovely and very Chambolle in character. In Bond£450.00 -

(from Les Condemennes, Les Athets and Les Babillières). A more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of spicy red and dark raspberry scents. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish. In Bond£450.00 -

A rich full purple with a plump and stylish fruit, some violets, a generous red fruit, light tannins in place, adequate acidity. Quite a different style of wine after tasting those of Domaine Robert Sirugue, and indeed Arnaud & Sophie. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£550.00
