Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (96-98)
The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has darker fruit on the nose than the Clos de la Roche: blackberry and bilberry, crushed violet, and plenty of forest floor commingling with light granitic scents. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, very harmonious with a cashmere texture. There’s impressive weight on the finish with outstanding tension. I thought the 2021 was a knockout last year… This is, too.In Bond£2,150.00 -

Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,188.00 -

A bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038.In Bond£2,154.00 -

(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. The 2022 Aloxe-Corton Village was partially affected by hail and is the only cuvée to include whole bunches, which works well on the nose and has more freshness than the Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichets. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannins, and good tension on the finish. Delightful. In Bond£275.00 -

Mid crimson, with very little nose. The is a wealth of red fruit, but then the tannins are rather dry. This cuvée is usually a little more elegant. The finish suggests though that this will all come together. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£276.00 -

The first to be picked, which is unusual. A mid crimson colour with some dark raspberry and plum fruit, showing a bit more than the Chapitre. A succulent rich raspberry fruit on the palate., some tannins but nicely interwoven. The two Aloxe 1ers Crus seem to have traded places this year, and for once I have a clear preference for the Vercots. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£350.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)
The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 30% stems this year, which is translated onto the nose distinct from Jadot's other reds: cracked black pepper and damp earth infuse the red fruit and lend the complexity underlying their inclusion. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and much more depth than the previous vintage, with a slightly powdery/chalky finish. There’s plenty of energy and tension from start to finish; this should age in consummate style. In Bond£910.00 -

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Very reductive, partly from the barrel. However, the wine shows through on the palate with just a slightly dry finish. This rougher edge is the reduction speaking. While there is a fair weight of fruit here, the reduction is winning for now, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. Drink from 2030-2038.
