Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)
Pale lemon in colour. A very stylish nose, more elegance than the Referts, and a little fuller in body than La Garenne. The Champ Canet manages to be both floral and with an ideal ripeness of fruit on the nose, pure white orchard fruit across the palate, and backed by well-judged oak in the usual Jean-Marc Boillot vanilla style. Good clean acidity to finish, properly persistence. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£710.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)
More lemon than lime in the colour. More fruit than flowers in the bouquet. A slightly richer style of wine this year, with just enough tension behind, but these days the site is riper than in the past. There is certainly plenty of wine here. A more muscular Puligny. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£555.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)
Pale in colour, with a particularly attractive nose, discreet but with a fine balance between summer flowers and ripe apples. Not over demonstrative on the palate, but the fruit fills out the palate with complex nuances in the orchard fruit profile, and exceptional length. Drink from 2029-2037. Pale lemon and lime. The 20222 Les Referts has notably more density than the Garenne, a touch of salt on the citrus at the back of the palate, with generous yellow plum fruit in between. Good length. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£666.00 -

Pale colour with a light green tint. A little smoky touch to the bouquet along with a fresh greengage bouquet, good intensity on the palate, a proper backbone, an immaculate Puligny of medium intensity. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£291.00 -

The Joseph Pascal Puligny-Montrachet 2022 is a superior embodiment of expertise from its renowned producer, Joseph Pascal. Regarded as a luminary in the world of Burgundy wines, Joseph Pascal's vineyards lie in the revered Puligny-Montrachet region of eastern France. This vintage is a genuine expression of its exceptional terroir, revealing the aromatic complexity for which these Chardonnay grapes are famous.
Produced using time-honoured winemaking techniques, the Joseph Pascal Puligny-Montrachet 2022 is fermented in French oak barrels before undergoing malolactic fermentation to mellow its acidity, enhancing its characteristic elegance and roundness. This thoughtful process yields delicate stone fruit and citrus flavours that dance harmoniously with subtle hints of toast and brioche.
Exquisitely balanced with a fabulous mineral streak, this wine showcases the artful craftsmanship of its revered producer. A pinnacle of its genre, the Joseph Pascal Puligny-Montrachet 2022 represents a captivating experience for any discerning wine enthusiast.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru has more complexity on the nose than the Les Folatières, with cockle shells and muscles complementing the citrus fruit. Fine definition. The palate is well-balanced with greater depth, though I need to see a little more mineralité and tension develop on the finish. As such, I am more prudent with my score. In Bond£1,080.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, not quite as energetic as usual, though I appreciate the orchard fruit and light waxy aromas. The medium-bodied palate has a slightly pithy entry with lots of extract, leading to a satisfying, lightly spiced finish. Fine.In Bond£930.00 -

Fine mid yellow. The bouquet is beguiling, an attractive but not exaggerated ripeness, the steely backbone one hopes for well covered in fruit, and a fine long finish. Excellent aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£295.00 -

The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 30% stems this year, which is translated onto the nose distinct from Jadot's other reds: cracked black pepper and damp earth infuse the red fruit and lend the complexity underlying their inclusion. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and much more depth than the previous vintage, with a slightly powdery/chalky finish. There’s plenty of energy and tension from start to finish; this should age in consummate style. In Bond£910.00 -

Glowing fresh crimson colour. The nose shows fresh fruit without detail as yet. I am impressed by the weight and energy of this very promising Clos Vougeot There is plenty up front, muscular, but enough behind too. A beautiful finish as pure class peeps throughout. Very happy with this! Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£995.00 -

(5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru has quite a strict nose that feels a little overshadowed by the Domaine's outstanding Chassagne at the moment. The palate is well-balanced with an edgy opening, slightly chalky in texture, with light red apple and stem ginger notes appearing towards the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. In Bond£585.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain sports a little reduction on the nose. It’s a little earthy in style, the 40% new oak neatly integrated. The palate is balanced with a pleasant "fatness" on the entry, a little waxy in texture but like the Village Cru, it needs a little more tension on the pithy finish. In Bond£580.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Very reductive, partly from the barrel. However, the wine shows through on the palate with just a slightly dry finish. This rougher edge is the reduction speaking. While there is a fair weight of fruit here, the reduction is winning for now, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. Drink from 2030-2038. Burghound (91-94)
(from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated styleIn Bond£780.00 -

Pretty light lemon colour. Some floral character, fine precision, a little lemon note too. More an elegant Puligny than a powerful one, though there is certainly adequate flesh right across the palate, with an attractive tingle of acidity to finish. In Bond£764.00 -
