Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (90-93)
An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long. Lovely and very Chambolle in character. In Bond£450.00 -

Burghound (88-91)
(from Les Condemennes, Les Athets and Les Babillières). A more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of spicy red and dark raspberry scents. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish. In Bond£450.00 -

Pretty light lemon colour. Some floral character, fine precision, a little lemon note too. More an elegant Puligny than a powerful one, though there is certainly adequate flesh right across the palate, with an attractive tingle of acidity to finish. In Bond£757.00 -

A rich full purple with a plump and stylish fruit, some violets, a generous red fruit, light tannins in place, adequate acidity. Quite a different style of wine after tasting those of Domaine Robert Sirugue, and indeed Arnaud & Sophie. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£550.00 -

Wine Advocate (91)
Piuze's new 2022 Chablis La Butte "O" comes from the lieu-dit Butteaux but outside the confines of the premier cru. It's an attractive effort redolent of pear, toasted nuts, bee pollen, white flowers and youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with racy acids and a long mineral finish, it's a fine addition to the range. In Bond£391.00 -

The holding is next to Champ Canet rather than higher up towards Blagny. I am not finding much bouquet. There is plenty of density here, along with a youthful bitterness, as if lemon pips had been squeezed too strongly. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,471.00 -

Mostly Clos de la Jacquelotte but with some more fruit outside the Clos. They used to sell the extra part, but now prefer to keep it. Pale lemon colour, with a pleasing bouquet, not quite the volume of fruit of Garenne on the nose, but more on the palate where fruit rather than flesh drives the wine. Good length, well made. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,471.00 -

Pale colour with a light green tint. This has flesh and grip while the fruit style is not without elegance. The mineral acidity plays very nicely at the back. This wine has considerable potential. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£767.00 -

A mix of their various plots throughout this large vineyard. Clear pure pale lemon and Iime. The bouquet is more perfumed to suggest additional ripeness. Very pure intense white fruit, with good acidity, and just a lick of honeysuckle. The whole is very well balanced and will be delicious. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,471.00 -

Pale lime and lemon. More electric on the nose with a slight citrus too. Clean white fruit at the front of the palate, more power behind, a good example but not quite the precision of the finest. The finish continues well and shows a riper countenance. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£2,080.00 -
