Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

5 Star Wine. Fresh bright purple. What a radiant nose, all the heady joy of Vosne, such stylish bright ripe cherry fruit with some mixed red berries behind. Seamless texture and very long. Sheer class. Drink from 2028-2035.In Bond£438.00 -

A fascinating plot worked by horse and hand, as they cannot get access with the tractor. Super sensual yet with total finesse, a depth of fruit, a feeling of royalty in the quality, a little touch of quality pepper at the finish but it is evidently the vineyard speaking. Still needs to harmonise further, but this is very fine. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£420.00 -

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year.In Bond£480.00 -

The 2022 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a relatively light but fresh bouquet with slightly darker fruit than other Hautes-Côtes I tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and fine body, given its class, with a confit-like finish. This should be delicious. In Bond£395.00 -

Mid lemon yellow. A mix of engaging ripe fruit and some reduction. Complex, but also tightly wound, a tannic structure behind. It isn’t singing at this stage of its life, but I don’t doubt the qualities, so this should reach the upper end of the range. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A surprising degree of green to the colour. A light but fine bouquet, all quite discreet, then rather more fruit intensity on the palate, quite linear but not without a little flesh on the bones. Apples washed with lime. Fine and elegant finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£710.00 -

Another beautiful bouquet after an elegant colour. This keeps building, and seems to have rediscovered the magic of Combettes which I thought was lost in the hottest years. There is a fulsome weight of white fruit, while retaining energy. Just enough acidity, with ripe apples at the finish. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Fresh lemon and lime colour. The little lime note is there again. This is delicious on the palate, fills out a little more, retaining a chalky note. Balanced, precise and long. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£450.00 -

The provenance is Aux Jachées 60%, Chalandins and a smattering of Chaumes 1er Cru, prepared for bottling. 50% whole bunch, 50% new wood. A bright and even purple. The new wood integrates very well, with an impressive depth. This is work in progress that promises very well. A good weight of fruit and a high-class finish that persists properly. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£280.00 -

(from parcels located in Croix Blanche, La Columbière, Champs Goudins and Le Pré de la Folie). A spicier and more floral-inflected nose displays fruit that is more from the red side of the spectrum. The sleeker and finer, but not denser, medium weight flavors possess notably better depth and persistence on the markedly firmer finale. In Bond£1,000.00 -
The Gerard Duplessis Chablis 2022, an embodiment of elegance, is an exquisite classic from the heart of Bourgogne, France. Produced by the Duplessis family, this wine adheres to high standards of viticulture, showcasing their passion through generations. Drawn from meticulously grown Chardonnay vines planted on limestone soil, the wine unfolds the true expression of its terroir.
Each bottle prizes the unique minerality and crisp acidity that traditional Chablis is famous for. Aged on fine lees in stainless steel vats to retain its vibrant freshness, the distinctive Gerard Duplessis Chablis 2022 brings harmony between power and finesse with notes of citrus, green apple and hints of oyster shell. The 2022 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru takes a little more time to open on the nose than Picq's other cuvées but eventually reveals eucalyptus-tinged citrus fruit flanked by wet stone aromas. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, very saline but with a countervailing, almost honeyed element keeping this on its toes. This is a brilliant follow-up to the 2021.In Bond£288.00 -

Outstanding Top Value An expressive, fresh and ripe nose freely offers up its aromas of mostly white orchard fruit and floral wisps that possess plenty of classic Chablis typicity. The nicely rich and attractively vibrant middleweight flavors exude a subtle salinity on the clean, dry and sneaky long finish. This is lovely for its level and worth considering. In Bond£174.00 -

At the moment, the 2022 Chablis Au Dessus des Carrières is stoic on the nose compared to Picq's other cuvées, despite both of us giving our glasses vigorous swirls. The palate is where the action is: great concentration and depth, hints of white peach and nectarine, the power loaded at its back end. Give this two or three years in bottle. In Bond£204.00
