Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is quite backward on the nose and demands a bit of coaxing. Eventually, it reveals red apple, lemon verbena and light petrichor scents, though I would not describe it as "intense." The palate is well-balanced and elegant in style. It is not a powerful Grand Cru, but crisp, precise and almost delicate towards the finish. I suspect it will gain more weight by the time of bottling. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)The Bouchard holding in Le Corton is made up of white marl on top of limestone slabs, and protected by the forest from the evening sun. Pale lemon and lime. The nose is slightly backward, delicate little flowers, but with the correct stony, almost gravelly aspect. Some riper fruit notes putting their heads above the parapet. A significant saline character too, behind. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a very delineated, focused bouquet, well controlled with citrus fruit, lemon verbena, and light orange pith scents. The palate is poised, quite intense and certainly has superb tension. There are Golden Delicious and light marzipan notes on the persistent finish, completing a very promising Corton Charlemagne. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)Mid lemon yellow. Some delicacy, without disputing the imminent power. A pure bench of fresh white fruit, actually this is more about nuances than power, though it maintains energy all the way through, to a fine long finish. Love the tension, and the finesse, while some other versions may be more intense. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-96)From domaine fruit, picked on 26th August. 35% new wood from various forests. A deeper lemon yellow. Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. I don’t find it showing at its best today but I suspect that there is more to this to emerge later. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)Recently stirred so cloudy. Affects the bouquet too, so that is hard to judge. Unquestioned weight, plenty of energy, the lees with the wood shows more at the finish. No reason why this should not be an excellent wine. Another sample was produced, representing the component raised in foudre only, 10 barrels worth, so one third of the whole, has a clear pale lemon and lime colour. The fruit is clearly ripe but with no signs of exotic fruit. This fills the palate beautifully, a little citrus, enough white fruit flesh and then a long stony finish. Absolutely what it should be, and in 2022 something more. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale colour with a lime tint. The bouquet indicates some power but no detail, as yet. Lush white fruit with a slightly honeyed note, continues well across the palate, a little toast and just enough acidity. The aftertaste continues quite well, while showing the riper aspects. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)90% is from the Pernand. Side, a third old vines, a third 20 year old, a third 35 year old. And guess what, the youngest are in the worst condition. Some tressed, some worked by winch. Pale colour, a beautifully mineral nose, properly shows its terroir. The wine picks up speed further back on the palate, opening out very nicely. Very attractive. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: October 2023. |
