Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc comes mainly from Les Belles Filles and from contracted must. The well-defined nose has very light nougat scents percolating through the citrus fruit. The palate is well-balanced with a fresh, slightly flinty opening. Nothing complex, yet focused with a fine sense of linearity on the finish. Drink over the next 4-6 years. In Bond£150.00 -

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a vivid, bright bouquet with perfumed, very floral red berry fruit and touches of white flowers filtering through with time in the glass. Quite classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, slightly tarry black and red fruit, hints of black pepper and graphite towards a complex, engaging finish. SuperIn Bond£1,425.00 -

100% new wood. Dense dark purple, the nose currently dominated by the oak, but it will integrate well without any sign of drying the ample fruit. We cannot see the detail yet but the 2022 Echezeaux finishes gracefully, with finesse. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£980.00 -

Made up from 16 different plots. A pale lemon colour. The nose is undemonstrative but one senses the concentration behind. Indeed, the fruit builds to the back of the palate with a little ripe citrus and correct acidity. Fine length, a little more interest than the very capable Puligny. Drink from 2029-2034. Some light green reflections in the primrose yellow colour. A stricter nose, perhaps a touch of sulphur. This may also appear more backward coming after the Charmes. Then a vast wealth of fruit on the palate and now we see the real wine. It maintains the herbal note I associate with Genevrières, alongside golden fruit at a perfect degree of ripeness. The fruit and the acidity weave in and out of each other. I would not want the fruit to be riper but it is full of charm as it stands, and kept in place by the precision of the structure. Very fine. Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. The white fruit continues on the palate and is now joined by a saline note, while the ripe apples give an immediate appeal. There are little waves of flavour towards the back of the palate. Once again the aftertaste is fine, precise and thoroughly promising. Drink from 2027-2032.In Bond£509.00 -

Mid lemon yellow. A very slight toasty note. This is fuller than the more mineral Croix de Pierre, as it gets the western sun, but that makes for a very pleasing, rounded mouthful. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and touches of lavender, complementing the vivacious red fruit. It is an archetypal Echézeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It’s quite peppery towards the finish, so you might misconstrue it as containing some whole bunches. Very satisfying complexity on the finish; this is an excellent Eche.In Bond£695.00 -

No deeper in colour than its stable mates but broader in bouquet, offering a fleshy white fruit. The balance here is impeccable on the palate, with fine acidity behind that supports the generosity of fruit. A good example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£230.00 -

A little more power to the nose ahead of its stablemates Charmes and Genevrières, indeed much more backward. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. This has an impressively broad density of fruit behind, the detail not yet being expressed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£265.00 -

Pale in colour, the nose displaying a slight green hazelnut reduction which is not at all unpleasant. Indeed, it adds tension to the wine. There is impressive weight on the palate, some concentrated plum and greengage, good acidity. This still needs more elevage but shows promise. Drink from 2028-2035. The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre has more detail and terroir expression than the Combottes: well-defined with crushed stone and dried yellow flowers complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy texture. A dash of white pepper enlivens this Pernand, which fans out nicely on the finish. One of my picks from Jadot's whites this year.In Bond£225.00 -

In foudre. Fine mid purple. The bouquet shows the cooler aspects of Pernand though this is a fine east facing vineyard. Really racy lively stuff with excellent energy behind, concentrated fresh raspberry. This should also age well even though the tannins do not spring to the fore – but there is a natural sense of balance. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£155.00 -

The Meix Chavaux is blended between 350 and 600 litre barrels. Very attractive lemon and lime colour, with a racy characterful nose, fresh apple, a little lime blossom, fresh energy throughout. I love the graceful yet lifted quality of this wine. It should fill out later on, but is already clearly on the right road. We also tried the same wine, but racked back to barrel to see what a longer elevage will look like. A little more yellow in the colour, while the nose is rounder, showing the wood only in terms of weight not of taste. Fills out the middle in the way I was looking for from the main wine. Either way, Meix Chavaux is a big step up. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£436.00 -

Still in barrel. A gorgeous lemon and lime colour with a striking bouquet, the herbal side is fully there, plus an intensity which never oversteps the mark. Body and class together. Weighty and enticing at the same time. Very well done. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£680.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with mineral-driven citrus fruit and hints of honeysuckle developing in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with a sapid entry. A little resinous in texture, there is plenty of extract, underlying the complex, stem ginger and lemon thyme-tinged finish. Give this plenty of bottle age, and there is very good potential. In Bond£525.00
