Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Mid cherry red. Bright red-fruited aroma, more cranberry in its impression of freshness. The stems showing in a light herbal note. Stems adding to the tannins on the palate, too, but they are so polished. Needs more time than some to silkify. Pure and deep with a touch of oak spice and sweetness on the very end. Impressive depth of fruit and great length. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)An attractive mid crimson colour. A fine fresh bouquet, elegant fruit, not too demonstrative, but with a graceful detailed red fruit, alpine strawberry and little raspberry notes. Very nicely put together, all about the fruit more than the structure. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)The Clos de Malte has a lively ruby colour. The nose is an immediate delight of fresh red fruit, a bit of cherry. Firm structure, acidity, tannins and a little nuttiness, all of which will resolve reasonably quickly in bottle, leaving this entirely delicious fruit to enjoy. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)Made in a mix of 350 and new 600 litre barrels. Mid lemon yellow. A little toast on the nose, this is stricter than Champ Claude, just a little bit of reduction, good length again. Develops a more concentrated apple note further back on the palate. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)From Les Hates and Prarons. Mid purple, A greener aspect to the nose, but an extra degree of classy red fruit on the palate, and a better texture at the finish. Decanter (93)Pacalet's village Vosne is a delight, with a lovely, forward blackberry fruit expression with hints of violets and earth. The texture is firmly tannic but supple enough to suggest that it will drink well reasonably young and a finish that lingers luminously. The grape sources have evolved a bit – he now cites Au-dessus de la Rivière at the base of the slope and le Barreaux and La Combe Brûlée at the top. The grapes are mainly fermented as whole clusters without sulphur until bottling, and the wine ages two winters in cask, primarily used. |
