Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Fine mid yellow. The bouquet is beguiling, an attractive but not exaggerated ripeness, the steely backbone one hopes for well covered in fruit, and a fine long finish. Excellent aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£295.00 -

No deeper in colour than its stable mates but broader in bouquet, offering a fleshy white fruit. The balance here is impeccable on the palate, with fine acidity behind that supports the generosity of fruit. A good example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£230.00 -

A little more power to the nose ahead of its stablemates Charmes and Genevrières, indeed much more backward. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. This has an impressively broad density of fruit behind, the detail not yet being expressed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£265.00 -

Pale in colour, the nose displaying a slight green hazelnut reduction which is not at all unpleasant. Indeed, it adds tension to the wine. There is impressive weight on the palate, some concentrated plum and greengage, good acidity. This still needs more elevage but shows promise. Drink from 2028-2035. (5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

The Meix Chavaux is blended between 350 and 600 litre barrels. Very attractive lemon and lime colour, with a racy characterful nose, fresh apple, a little lime blossom, fresh energy throughout. I love the graceful yet lifted quality of this wine. It should fill out later on, but is already clearly on the right road. We also tried the same wine, but racked back to barrel to see what a longer elevage will look like. A little more yellow in the colour, while the nose is rounder, showing the wood only in terms of weight not of taste. Fills out the middle in the way I was looking for from the main wine. Either way, Meix Chavaux is a big step up. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£438.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Mid lemon. The bouquet indicates a surprising breadth of flavour, as if this were a riper spot, and the attack continues in the same fashion, before the wine tightens up at the back in a crystalline fashion, as the stones take over. Very much a food wine, and one which will reward ageing. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£495.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Two separate terroirs, the slope with a little clay topsoil, the plateau just the stones. This shows a little bit of both styles. Broader in the beam, some ripe apple fruits, a little tannic at the finish, fine wine that does not quite challenge the supremacy of En Montceau. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£488.00 -

Three plots which come from maternal grandmother Lucie. Mid lemon yellow, with a very pretty bouquet that gives an immediate desire to drink it. A salivating stony finish, beautifully done. Almost tannic says Damien, and even a little saline. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£371.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru has quite a strict nose that feels a little overshadowed by the Domaine's outstanding Chassagne at the moment. The palate is well-balanced with an edgy opening, slightly chalky in texture, with light red apple and stem ginger notes appearing towards the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. In Bond£585.00 -

The 2022 Saint-Aubin Charmois 1er Cru, completely frosted in the previous vintage, has a tightly wound nose with crushed stone filtering through malic fruit. It is Puligny-like, terse as that is appealing, with touches of white tea and chamomile. The palate is well-balanced with impressive tension on the entry, gorgeous flecks of white peach and Satsuma with a prickle of ginger on the finish. Seek this out.In Bond£426.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain sports a little reduction on the nose. It’s a little earthy in style, the 40% new oak neatly integrated. The palate is balanced with a pleasant "fatness" on the entry, a little waxy in texture but like the Village Cru, it needs a little more tension on the pithy finish. In Bond£580.00 -

Still in barrel. A gorgeous lemon and lime colour with a striking bouquet, the herbal side is fully there, plus an intensity which never oversteps the mark. Body and class together. Weighty and enticing at the same time. Very well done. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£680.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)
Clear pale lemon. The bouquet offers a slightly more chiselled note, though still delivering white orchard fruit. Crisp and concentrated on the palate, with a generous build-up of fruit and a long aftertaste. Drink from 2028-2035.In Bond£525.00 -

Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has an intense, minerally bouquet with touches of chalk, yellow plum and light blood orange aromas. The palate is well-balanced, one of Bouzereau's more powerful cuvées with impressive persistence and a sapid aftertaste. The pedigree of the terroir really comes through in this Meursault. In Bond£675.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a typical Perrières bouquet with crushed rock/flint percolating through the veneer of slightly tropical fruit. It takes time to settle in the glass. The palate is harmonious with bright acidity, a much more elegant style of Perrières with a creamy finish that lingers in the mouth. That build in the mouth is deeply impressive, although it retains composure and finesse from start to finish. In Bond£840.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
An attractive racy pale primrose. The bouquet is fully of energy, this is not too heavy a Charmes, but a fine one. The palate offers an excellent weight of fruit, ripe apples, a little fresh plum, very good grip and a long finish. Smart stuff! In Bond£600.00
