Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Purple in the centre with a lighter rim. The nose speaks a little of its oak and a lot of its fruit, a riper style of red berries, yet with good acidity behind, indeed quite fresh at the finish after a slight heaviness up front. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£725.00 -

A full primrose yellow. The bouquet is sturdier here, surprisingly, after the pure white fruit Bâtard. However, the chiselled elegance of Chevalier shows much more on the palate, where there is an impressive, if initially restrained, intensity and a second wave of flavour further back on the palate. This will be particularly fine and the aftertaste is notably persistent. A very long finish indeed. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,200.00 -

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a vivid, bright bouquet with perfumed, very floral red berry fruit and touches of white flowers filtering through with time in the glass. Quite classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, slightly tarry black and red fruit, hints of black pepper and graphite towards a complex, engaging finish. SuperIn Bond£1,425.00 -

100% new wood. Dense dark purple, the nose currently dominated by the oak, but it will integrate well without any sign of drying the ample fruit. We cannot see the detail yet but the 2022 Echezeaux finishes gracefully, with finesse. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£980.00 -

Cask sample. A touch smoky on the nose. Invitingly stony/mineral aroma. Then this unexpectedly creamy rounded texture and still excellent freshness with a lightly sour aftertaste increasing the freshness. In Bond£285.00 -

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and touches of lavender, complementing the vivacious red fruit. It is an archetypal Echézeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It’s quite peppery towards the finish, so you might misconstrue it as containing some whole bunches. Very satisfying complexity on the finish; this is an excellent Eche.In Bond£695.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Mid lemon. The bouquet indicates a surprising breadth of flavour, as if this were a riper spot, and the attack continues in the same fashion, before the wine tightens up at the back in a crystalline fashion, as the stones take over. Very much a food wine, and one which will reward ageing. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£496.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Two separate terroirs, the slope with a little clay topsoil, the plateau just the stones. This shows a little bit of both styles. Broader in the beam, some ripe apple fruits, a little tannic at the finish, fine wine that does not quite challenge the supremacy of En Montceau. Drink from 2026-2032. Three plots which come from maternal grandmother Lucie. Mid lemon yellow, with a very pretty bouquet that gives an immediate desire to drink it. A salivating stony finish, beautifully done. Almost tannic says Damien, and even a little saline. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£371.00 -

The 2022 Saint-Aubin Charmois 1er Cru, completely frosted in the previous vintage, has a tightly wound nose with crushed stone filtering through malic fruit. It is Puligny-like, terse as that is appealing, with touches of white tea and chamomile. The palate is well-balanced with impressive tension on the entry, gorgeous flecks of white peach and Satsuma with a prickle of ginger on the finish. Seek this out.In Bond£426.00 -

The vines were planted in 1962 and 1968. Pale to mid lemon in colour. A light reduction on the nose. The limestone is close to the surface on the nose, a little biscuit note, this is discreet but evidently with a fine tensile strength. Just leave this the time to blossom and it will become a really fine example. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,416.00 -

Another rich dark colour. Half new wood, but it seems to dominate much less here than it did in the Boudots. There is plenty of substance but the desirable Echezeaux nuances are there too. Give this time to refine and I think it will make an excellent Echezeaux. Drink from 2032-2039. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£1,575.00 -
