Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with more floral tones than the Les Millandes, wilted violets infusing the black and red fruit, fine mineralité coming from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite fresh and saline, with a cohesive, very "controlled" finish that lends this wine verticality. Very sapid. Give this 3-4 years in bottle. In Bond£270.00 -

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is a tiny production matured each year in a single, tailor-made "Aphrodite" barrel from the Cavin cooperage. This vintage is just 400 liters. Because of the very light toasting, the new oak does not impede the aromatics: brambly red berry fruit and fish scale touches. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet and slightly candied opening, offering blood orange-laced fleshy red fruit, with vanilla towards the finish. It is very seductive, and despite the new oak, the structure suggests this will be more approachable than Legros's other cuvées.In Bond£330.00 -

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru comes from two parcels, one planted north-south and the other east-west. Its attractive bouquet offers brambly red berry fruit, forest floor and light black truffle scents. There is good complexity here; it is very composed. The palate is well-balanced, with good depth and gentle grip. There is mainly black fruit here with plenty of freshness and mineralité. The finish has commendable precision and feels long and tender. Excellent. In Bond£290.00 -

(5 Star Wine) 100% new Tronçais wood, for April bottling. A deep central core of purple. Very intense indeed without being clumsy. There is a massive structure here to build on, but it is all about the intensity of the fruit. Deep red not black, almost as thrilling as the 2020 Echezeaux. Waves more fruit come flooding back across the palate, with everything in perfect proportion. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£2,025.00 -

30% new wood, including one 400 litre barrel, which is the way Jean-Pierre will go in future for the first year, and then earthenware jars for the second elevage. A touch of liquorice. This has a much denser texture than used to be the case, and a superb fruit acid balance. Extremely impressive for village Morey blanc. A wine which will develop in time. Drink from 2026-2032. A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.In Bond£1,248.00 -

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. This cuvée no longer contains Clos des Lambrays young vines. The plot called 30 rangs (planted 2000) was in this wine up to 2021. La Riotte and Le Village remain, the 20 ares of Clos Sorbe has been added to new vineyards (see below) from Domaine Cosson, but instead there is fruit from half a hectare of Les Blanchards, also ex Cosson. Glowing purple. A beautifully lifted bouquet with 40% whole bunches, alpine strawberries, all in finesse. Then the wine builds to an extra level of intensity, more than expected from the elegance of the nose, The fruit shows additional nuances as well, entirely red fruit, some ripe cherries now showing as well. Just a few spices to finish. In Bond£630.00 -

25% whole bunch vinification and one new barrel in four. Medium depth of colour with a slightly earthy nose. Quite a solid 1er Cru with the more savoury style of Morey, but not quite convincing. (from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale.
