Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) 100% new wood. Dense dark purple, the nose currently dominated by the oak, but it will integrate well without any sign of drying the ample fruit. Jancis Robinson (17.5) Cask sample. Oak shows a little more here in the aroma than on most of the Boisset whites. Mealy and spiced and a touch of vanilla. Really creamy and rounded, so generous and caressing but balanced by great freshness. Embryonically delicious with a long, piercing finish. More Info

Jancis Robinson (17) Cask sample. Deep-fruited and spicy, citrus and herbs. Finely creamy texture, deep, long and fresh with a slight sour note at the very end that seems to clash a little with the creamy, fruit-sweet aftertaste. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A glowing pale lime colour. Some restrained floral notes, but not demonstrative. On the palate there is a strong line of chalky white fruit, with a discreet intensity, but clearly adequately ripe. Not a wine to drink young as there is so much more to give. Drink from 2028-2035. Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Picked between 2nd and 5th September. A very pretty clean lemon and lime. The oak is very well integrated into the classy nose. Plenty of energy but also light on its feet for Morgeot without betraying the appellation, and the fruit persists particularly well on the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94) Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. More Info

The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a more airy and floral bouquet than the Embazées, leaning slightly towards Puligny in style. The palate doesn't quite match the promise set by the nose – it is quite weighty and concentrated with an overtly spicy finish. I was expecting more precision here, and I might prefer the previous vintage. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A blend of Abbaye de Morgeot and Francemont. Medium deep yellow. The nose is a little biscuity and a little backward. Then there is surprising weight, largely yellow plum fruit, very good fruit/acid integration, and fair length. This wine does indeed show the power of the Morgeot terroir. Drink from 2030-2038. Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96) The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and touches of lavender, complementing the vivacious red fruit. It is an archetypal Echézeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It’s quite peppery towards the finish, so you might misconstrue it as containing some whole bunches. Very satisfying complexity on the finish; this is an excellent Eche. More Info
