Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2022 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a relatively light but fresh bouquet with slightly darker fruit than other Hautes-Côtes I tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and fine body, given its class, with a confit-like finish. This should be delicious. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Mid lemon yellow. A mix of engaging ripe fruit and some reduction. Complex, but also tightly wound, a tannic structure behind. It isn’t singing at this stage of its life, but I don’t doubt the qualities, so this should reach the upper end of the range. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A surprising degree of green to the colour. A light but fine bouquet, all quite discreet, then rather more fruit intensity on the palate, quite linear but not without a little flesh on the bones. Apples washed with lime. Fine and elegant finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Another beautiful bouquet after an elegant colour. This keeps building, and seems to have rediscovered the magic of Combettes which I thought was lost in the hottest years. There is a fulsome weight of white fruit, while retaining energy. Just enough acidity, with ripe apples at the finish. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

The new wood integrates very well, with an impressive depth. This is work in progress that promises very well. A good weight of fruit and a high-class finish that persists properly. Burghound (89-91)(from parcels located in Croix Blanche, La Columbière, Champs Goudins and Le Pré de la Folie). A spicier and more floral-inflected nose displays fruit that is more from the red side of the spectrum. The sleeker and finer, but not denser, medium weight flavors possess notably better depth and persistence on the markedly firmer finale. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)100% new wood, to bottle in April. The wood comes from mixed forests, as Jean-Pierre thinks Tronçais doesn’t work here. A bright fresh crimson ruby. More floral more sensual, the early morning rose says Jean-Pierre. This is more quintessentially Vosne than the Brûlées, with a lifted and balanced flair, a mix of darked red fruits, avoiding the blacker side. White pepper spice becomes more apparent at the end. A thick velvet coat of fruit throughout. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)(5 Star Wine) Deep ruby crimson colour. At this end of the scale the power of the fruit and the vineyard character completely outweigh the vinification. 100% new wood (Tronçais) is invisible. Instead, we find the slaty and singed character of the vineyard, plus an astonishing wealth of fruit. A thickness of texture which is extraordinary. Quite stunning this year with the blood red depth of fruit. Enough acidity behind and exceptional pure as well as concentrated. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)40% new wood, December bottling. Far from the deepest in colour, but definitely not the least elegant either! Rose petals abound. A few fresh alpine strawberries too. This has remarkable tension on the palate and is almost as nuanced as an Echezeaux (at least as, Jean-Pierre thinks!). Certainly there is a gorgeous, almost glossy aftertaste. Highest pH. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |
