Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£910.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)
The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru, which comes from the Chassagne side, also showed some of the barrel on the nose like the Chevalier, but overall, it seems more primal and less terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with a resinous entry, surfeit with extract, though I am seeking a little more finesse and mineralité on the finish. A little broad-shouldered at the moment. In Bond£2,500.00 -

(5 Star Wine) Pale primrose in colour. Noticeably more majesty here, a greater depth and also a little touch of oak. Halfway at least to Montrachet. An entirely coherent expression with a stunning density of white fruit, and a perfectly integrated acidity. This year the Cabotte is closer to the power of Montrachet, a brilliant wine. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,235.00 -

(5 Star Wine) Fine pure lemon yellow. The bouquet starts off rather reserved. A suggestion of immense weight, certainly some new oak, but waiting for the fruit and the personality of the wine to emerge. Now some coconut and the feeling that the wine is about to release its magic. Superbly suave on the palate, more lifted than I expected and still the main core of the wine does not want to be touched. A fine mineral acidity at the finish but still wait and see. Only right at the end does it all start to kick in. A wine of immense density for the very long-term future. Retasting the glorious Cabotte reinforces the majesty of this Montrachet. Drink from 2034-2045+. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£2,574.00 -

5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! A fine mid lemon yellow. The bouquet is extremely stylish, showing a Chevalier with depth of flavour. There is lots more to tease out. Really impressive concentration here, just a few toasty notes, an extra body that comes from this emplacement. Just the right mineral acidity behind. Drink from 2032-2040. A pure clear lemon colour. The extra weight of Montrachet is indeed apparent on the nose. Ripe pears. Perhaps this is a little less in the Sauzet style, not being from their own fruit, but it is impressive. The weight on the palate is profound, with certainly ripe fruit but also a point of minerality right in the middle, and good acidity. Almost a wine to eat rather than drink. It does indeed have the requisite very long finish. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£3,746.00 -

Vinous (95-97)
The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is the only cuvée in two one-year-old barrels. I don't think it needs new oak. There is real energy and complexity here, orange pith and lemon verbena, touches of lemon curd. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and power, far more than the Bâtard-Montrachet. It has a beguiling length and precision, velvety smooth, with a hint of walnut on the finish. Divine. In Bond£1,000.00 -

1.5 barrels. Fullish yellow with ripe fruit, a touch of bacon fat along with Jerusalem artichokes. As well as the beautiful quality of fruit there is a saline touch. Certainly complex, not monstrously massive, showing more today than the Bâtard but there is correspondingly even more to come. Fresh white fruit at the very finish. Drink from 2030-2040. A full primrose yellow. The bouquet is sturdier here, surprisingly, after the pure white fruit Bâtard. However, the chiselled elegance of Chevalier shows much more on the palate, where there is an impressive, if initially restrained, intensity and a second wave of flavour further back on the palate. This will be particularly fine and the aftertaste is notably persistent. A very long finish indeed. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,200.00 -

Still on its fine lees. A fine fresh very pale primrose colour. Super discreet nose, just offering some light floral notes at first, but you know there is so much more to come. It is not over exuberant but the fruit comes across the palate in little wavelets, perfectly balanced acidity, the oak subsumed into the intensity of the fruit. The 2022 Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet bows out with a wonderfully long and fine finish. Drink from 2034-2045. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£3,801.00 -
