Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Pacalet's village Vosne is a delight, with a lovely, forward blackberry fruit expression with hints of violets and earth. The texture is firmly tannic but supple enough to suggest that it will drink well reasonably young and a finish that lingers luminously. The grape sources have evolved a bit – he now cites Au-dessus de la Rivière at the base of the slope and le Barreaux and La Combe Brûlée at the top. The grapes are mainly fermented as whole clusters without sulphur until bottling, and the wine ages two winters in cask, primarily used.In Bond£1,620.00 -

5 Star Wine. From vines planted in 1971 and 1976. The same pale clear colour. The nose is chiselled and backward. With a minute or two in the glass, the opulence starts to show. There is an awful lot of wine in this glass but it remains really tightly wound. Magical structure, and exceptional length. This is going to make a great Montée de Tonnerre with lasting abilities. Fresh white pears, nothing too rich nor sunny. The finish just will not stop! Yet the wine is both refreshing and complex at the same time. Drink from 2027-2035.In Bond£285.00 -

Appealing already, warm and with a sunny disposition on the palate, there is plenty of driving acidity to balance. Billaud explains that the white clay gives more power. Plenty of tension here. Will age. Not at all overripe. A fine example of Montmains with the vines averaging 35 years old. No barrels. In Bond£245.00 -

A special bottling from vines more than 90 years old: a vineyard marked by a high proportion of stones and old rootstock. Although it ages as well as Montée de Tonnerre, Billaud's Séchet will finish in a different place. Matured only in stainless steel for 18 months on lees with one racking, it's really very classy and long. A great combination of pear fruit, touch of sunny peach on the palate with abundant minerality to finish. In Bond£275.00 -

Pretty forceful, direct acidity here. Classic Chablis style. Will age. Comes from two plots situated on the left bank of the Serein, with one positioned below Montée de Tonnerre. They are fermented and kept separate before blending. Mostly hand-harvested.In Bond£135.00 -

All destemmed as Aux Réas has all the limestone freshness it needs. A dense dark purple, almost black in the centre. A little bit reduced which slightly dries the finish, but that will be sorted. Brilliant fruit between the two plenty of energy, a saline touch behind the dark red fruit. A fine crunchy finish as the wine cleans up in the glass. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A brilliant wine in the making, Dauvissat's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forest unfurls in the glass with youthfully reductive scents of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit, white flowers, oyster shell and subtle hints of orange blossom. The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Séchet unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp stone fruits, ripe lemons, white flowers, clear honey and subtle hints of warm spices. Distinct shellfish notes. Plenty of volume, a fleshy sunny character on the palate, freshened by lingering salinity to finish. Top example of AP Chablis in 2022. From 40ha of vines, with three distinct plots, including one from a lovely vineyard to the east around Viviers, with vines planted in the 1960s, but all of the vines have plenty of age.In Bond£193.00 -

Located at the very start of Troesmes, 55 to 60 year old vines. Fine fresh lemon yellow. A clean and elegant fruit forward nose, lighter in style than most 1ers crus, hence its place in the line-up. A stunning example, with finesse allied to power. Real tension and energy here. Will be approachable quite young, but really should be aged for over five years for the best result. Fèvre has 2.24ha within Montée de Tonnerre. Plots are located in Pied d'Aloup (facing east) with profound Kimmeridgian soils bringing freshness, Chapelot facing south on deep soil adding richness, and Côte de Brechain facing west on top of the hill with the oldest plots dating back to 1936.In Bond£348.00
