Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Truly a testament to classic French viticulture, the Malandes Chablis 2022 is an elegantly balanced white wine. Born in the prestigious vineyards of Burgundy, it is crafted by Domaine des Malandes, a producer celebrated for instilling excellence and tradition in every bottle. Justly expressing the rich Chablis terroir, it is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, hand-picked during the peak of maturity. The wine sees fermentation in stainless steel vats, a method contributing to its noted purity and freshness. With a scent reminiscent of green apple and Meyer lemon - the palate articulates an enchanting interlude of mineral, delicate citrus, and floral notes, resulting in a well-defined, crisp finish. Aged to perfection, the Malandes Chablis 2022 illuminates a sophisticated palate and is a brilliant complement to seafood and mild, creamy cheeses. This outstanding wine stunningly encapsulates classic Chablis character, seamlessly blending depth, mineral intensity, and sublime fruit. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)A full dark purple, again bolstered by the barrel. Dark fruit, which maintains an even presence across the palate. This one does not fade in the middle as some Suchots can do. A fine long balanced finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)Medium deep ruby. A restrained nose, quiet juicy dark fruit on the palate, once again plumper than the Sirugue equivalents. Fills the mouth attractively, albeit still with a couple of barrel tannins evident at the finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023. |

Wine Advocate (91)Piuze's new 2022 Chablis La Butte "O" comes from the lieu-dit Butteaux but outside the confines of the premier cru. It's an attractive effort redolent of pear, toasted nuts, bee pollen, white flowers and youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with racy acids and a long mineral finish, it's a fine addition to the range. |

Decanter (93)Pacalet's village Vosne is a delight, with a lovely, forward blackberry fruit expression with hints of violets and earth. The texture is firmly tannic but supple enough to suggest that it will drink well reasonably young and a finish that lingers luminously. The grape sources have evolved a bit – he now cites Au-dessus de la Rivière at the base of the slope and le Barreaux and La Combe Brûlée at the top. The grapes are mainly fermented as whole clusters without sulphur until bottling, and the wine ages two winters in cask, primarily used. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from two parcels (one in Haut Chapelot near Raveneau and the other in Montée de Tonnerre lieu-dit). The strict nose has crushed stone scents, hints of damp moss and sea cave. Very fine delineation. The palate has a penetrating entry with another killer line of acidity. It is tensile and steely with serious weight towards the grippy finish. Very sustained, this is a brilliant Montée de Tonnerre. |

Decanter (93)Appealing already, warm and with a sunny disposition on the palate, there is plenty of driving acidity to balance. Billaud explains that the white clay gives more power. Plenty of tension here. Will age. Not at all overripe. A fine example of Montmains with the vines averaging 35 years old. No barrels. |

Decanter (95)A special bottling from vines more than 90 years old: a vineyard marked by a high proportion of stones and old rootstock. Although it ages as well as Montée de Tonnerre, Billaud's Séchet will finish in a different place. Matured only in stainless steel for 18 months on lees with one racking, it's really very classy and long. A great combination of pear fruit, touch of sunny peach on the palate with abundant minerality to finish. |

Decanter (92)Pretty forceful, direct acidity here. Classic Chablis style. Will age. Comes from two plots situated on the left bank of the Serein, with one positioned below Montée de Tonnerre. They are fermented and kept separate before blending. Mostly hand-harvested. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)All destemmed as Aux Réas has all the limestone freshness it needs. A dense dark purple, almost black in the centre. A little bit reduced which slightly dries the finish, but that will be sorted. Brilliant fruit between the two plenty of energy, a saline touch behind the dark red fruit. A fine crunchy finish as the wine cleans up in the glass. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Wine Advocate (93-96)A brilliant wine in the making, Dauvissat's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forest unfurls in the glass with youthfully reductive scents of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit, white flowers, oyster shell and subtle hints of orange blossom. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with superb depth at the core and an electric finish, this cuvée has navigated the vintage's extremes with ease. |
