Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Fixin En Combe Roy contains 50% stems, which loom over the current aromatics: dark berry fruit, cola, cracked black pepper and a faint wild fennel aroma. Very complex. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and gentle grip. More tertiary in style, a little "gawkier" (if you can call an unfinished wine that), that it will certainly cohere during its élevage. It will require 3-4 years in bottle, but this is another very promising Fixin. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Drink from 2032-2040. |

Jancis Robinson (16.5)Cask sample. So different from the creamy 'sweetness' of the Marsannay. More spicy, savoury, and a touch smoky. And no lack of pure citrus. Sour-fresh intensity on the palate balanced by tension from the acidity and still a rounded impression on the finish. Very long and slightly sour on the finish. Needs a little more time in bottle. |

Envisage a burst of intense red fruits mingling with rustic undertones in the Jerome Galeyrand Fixin Champs de Vosger 2022. Crafted in the heart of Burgundy, France, this exquisite variety is a testament to the expertise of Jerome Galeyrand, a renowned winemaker celebrated for his natural wine-making techniques. This particular wine is made using hand-sorted Pinot Noir grapes from a single vineyard, which are then fermented naturally and aged in oak barrels for two years. It results in a wine that elegantly presents balanced acidity, subtle tannins, and rich flavours, peppered with violet and earthy undertones. The Jerome Galeyrand Fixin Champs de Vosger 2022 is a paragon of Burgundy wines, epitomising the region's rich terroir and winemaking history. This unparalleled indulgence is much coveted by wine collectors for its potential to mature and evolve over time, making it a true connoisseur's delight. |
