Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)
(5 Star Wine) This has not fallen clear after a recent lees stirring. Jadot stir their Grands Crus twice after the fermentations, once each in summer and autumn. There is significant weight as you would expect, almost a monolithic block, a little citrus, both lemon and lime. Impeccable length. This requires significantly more ageing but should join its fellows on the podium. Drink from 2034-2040+. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,675.00 -

Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£910.00 -

The Bâtard is still in barrel, without any sulphur adjustment, so in fact needs refreshing which will happen, especially when it goes into tank. Primrose colour, ripe pears with some passion fruit. A significant wealth of fruit but the final wine is not easy to be sure of at this stage. Clean pure fruit returns, not so obvious acidity. This wine is likely to develop better than it is currently showing. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£905.00 -
Exemplify your palate with the exceptional Bruno Colin Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022. Gracing the idyllic slopes of Batard-Montrachet, a region esteemed for producing some of the world’s finest white Burgundy, sits the vineyard of Bruno Colin. This exquisite wine owes its distinct complexity and delicacy to a meticulous vinification process, which includes gentle pneumatic pressing, and judicious oak ageing, never exceeding 50% new. Additional élevage in the cellar for a period of 19 months imbues finesse into this drink. Savour each sip of this sophisticated Grand Cru with its tantalising flavours, richly textured character, and remarkable ageing potential. Terroir-driven, Bruno Colin’s precise winemaking talents truly shine through this wine, elegantly reflecting the Montrachet’s unique Chardonnay expression. The Bruno Colin Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 combines traditional savoir-faire with contemporary sensibilities to shape a wine of superior quality, destined for those with an appreciation of the finer things.

5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040. The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has an almost clinical bouquet with more penetration than the Criots served alongside. The medium-bodied palate has fine tension, but there is a real delicacy about this Bâtard with a very persistent, controlled finish and hints of white peach on the aftertaste. Wonderful. In Bond£695.00 -

A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£806.00 -

Four barrels made, one new and one each from the three preceding years. A clear pale lemon colour. The opulence of the vineyard shows in a controlled manner on the palate. A little oak shows but it is classy. As with Chartron’s other wines, there is a complementary acidity which helps the balance. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£900.00 -

The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a classy bouquet with beautifully defined black cherry and bilberry fruit, an underlying mineralité becoming more evident with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is fresh with finely chiseled tannins and impressive structure, yet finishes harmonious and pure. Bon vin.In Bond£186.00 -

Burghound (90-92)
A cooler and airier nose somewhat grudgingly displays its array of various dark berries, especially black raspberry, violet and a hint of wet stone character. The fleshy, rich and nicely textured medium weight flavors exhibit even more minerality on the youthfully austere, compact and serious finale. This balanced effort is textbook Es Chezots and should repay 8 to 12 years of keeping. In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Marsannay Blanc Les Longeroies has a backward, slightly reductive, flinty bouquet, suggesting it will benefit from time in bottle. The well-balanced palate is tensile and edgy with a keen thread of acidity. Bitter lemon and orange rind enliven the finish. Good potential. In Bond£186.00 -

The 2022 Marsannay Les Longeroies offers blackberry, wild hedgerow and forest floor scents on the nose, with a faint hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit and fine tannins. There is a little compactness towards the finish at the moment, but it is surfeit with freshness and tension. A hint of white pepper surfaces on the aftertaste. What a lovely Marsannay this will be.In Bond£186.00 -

Here the nose displays that peculiar kind of reduction called bourgeon de cassis, or cassis bud, that crowds out more interesting notes. On the palate there is much better freshness and verve to the detailed and stony middleweight flavors that deliver good depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finaleIn Bond£1,000.00 -

(the name refers to a small tower located just behind the domaine; the fruit comes from 6 different lieux-dits). A more floral-suffused nose presents a range of aromas that include violet, dark currant and black cherry. The very supple and fleshy middleweight flavors possess a seductive texture while exhibiting enough depth and persistence on the balanced finale to be interesting. The 2022 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes has discrete touches of fish scale and black olive on the nose, married neatly with the black fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry. Touches of fig and dates tincture the black fruit. Was this picked just a day or two later than optimal? It feels too sweet for my liking and compared to the previous vintage. In Bond£288.00 -

A pale colour with a lime tint. Backward but powerful, as it should be. Taking time to build on the palate, with a mineral thread of acidity, pure white fruit, expertly poised. There may be weightier examples around, but this is certainly very fine. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,175.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)
The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is one of the most backward reds from Jadot in barrel, but I managed to eke out some attractive raspberry, crushed strawberry and sous-bois aromas that look promising. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity and a surprisingly dense finish just needing to forage a little more mineralité. Good potential, but it will require 3 or 4 yearIn Bond£130.00 -
