Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)
30% decorticated, all new wood. A glowing imperial purple. What a wealth of fruit is here, how noble in reason. In another league from the other grands crus chez Thibault. I think the finest Richebourg I have seen from him. There is a coconut effect from the wood. The mid palate is particularly intense. An intense red fruit note, then dark raspberry, and the finish is completely swamped by the fruit. Drink from 2035-2045. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

All destemmed as Aux Réas has all the limestone freshness it needs. A dense dark purple, almost black in the centre. A little bit reduced which slightly dries the finish, but that will be sorted. Brilliant fruit between the two plenty of energy, a saline touch behind the dark red fruit. A fine crunchy finish as the wine cleans up in the glass. Drink from 2030-2037. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)
All destemmed, 25% new wood. Rather deeper in colour, ruby purple, with darker fruit on the nose. This has broad shoulders, with some depth to the fruit and more evident tannins, a wine that needs keeping. This one crept above 14% which does give a little heat at the finish. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£340.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an almost clinical bouquet, citrus fresh with commendable purity. Fully de-stemming this was a good decision as it already has sufficient spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of chocolaty oak sticking out. Hopefully, that will be assimilated with time - I will be cautious at the moment, but it should mature well in bottle. In Bond£380.00 -

Burghound (88-91)
(from Les Condemennes, Les Athets and Les Babillières). A more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of spicy red and dark raspberry scents. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish. In Bond£450.00 -

Burghound (91-94)
(from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated styleIn Bond£780.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-89)
Deep purple with an exotic exuberant nose, not too cooked. Lovely fresh red fruit despite the more exotic style, floral peony notes, ripe raspberries, relatively dancing, and with good length. Drink from 2025-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-90)
Not quite as deep a purple and the nose is a little more refined, less exuberant. There is no shortage of quality fruit on the palate, dark raspberry, a few more tannins, but they are ripe enough. The fruit covers the final structure very nicely. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)
A crisp clear purple. The nose is a little more exuberant than Lavières, perhaps going to a slightly darker riper fruit, with happily enough acidity. Just a little more rustic in the tannins. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Burghound (94-97)
(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. In Bond£1,000.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Mid lemon yellow. There is a little more generosity of fruit on the nose, this is properly ripe though it came in at 12.5%. It does not need any more. A little bacon fat reduction, perfectly balanced through the middle, enough acidity but not trenchant. More nuanced than Referts, on its way to becoming a very fine wine. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)
A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£806.00 -

The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc is superb. It offers up hints of apricot, baked apple tart, spice, vanillin and tangerine oil. Rich, dense and creamy, the Bourgogne Blanc hugely overdelivers. Henri Boillot offers a lot of wine here.In Bond£144.00 -

Mostly Aloxe with a touch of Pernand. Quite a full lemon yellow. The bouquet offers a balanced ripeness, with flinty notes more than opulent fruit. This Corton-Charlemagne shows very lively, white fruit, a little citrus, river bed minerals behind, and excellent persistence. Lots of crunch to finish. Drink from 2030-2038.
